his stuff isn’t cheap. i got one with 10% off, free shipping, no tax. still expensive, but not horrible.

stereo is a plus. having each channel being able to record up to 9 minutes is a plus. having numerous options for cv control for both channels is a plus.

i was interested in those, but the one with the drive control (is that the hp?). and they ain't cheap either.

not that i seem to be playing bass live at all in the next three months.

I see myself trying the Instruo looper at some point…seems so nice.

The Berg Forte HP is the 1,200 watt version with a drive channel, one knob compressor and both HPF and LPF. Love having the LPF a lot. I only have like 10 gigs on mine, but early impressions are very positive. They’re about $1,500, so a bit spendy for sure.
August usually my busiest month. I have done 18 gigs so far and it’s only the 14th day of the month!

On a sampling/crate digging mood.
Any recommendations for modular brands, demos, specific modules etc that I should look up for some sampler food? Not really looking for sequencer type stuff, more tones/Colors/ textures/ moods….etc

currently listening to some cwejman stuff, man those things sound good.

Divkid manages to make pretty much everything sound good, so check out his videos.

I have one and it can do soooooo much more than the typical “soft drone” thing in the typical TB vids.

I know there’s a Lyra VST out there and if I remember correctly it’s free.
(Not by Soma, it’s 3rd party)
Maybe get that to test out some tones.

I had a Lyra-8 for a while. It's very neat and I miss it.

Control of the timbre is pretty minimal, for a synth. And the sound really wants to dominate the mix. I found it needs some pretty heavyhanded EQ to get it to play well with others. It's got really strong and kind of tiring resonances, but it's also bright AND it needs highpass filtering to strip out the below-audio-rate garbage that gets in.

I sold mine because it felt like it was... headstrong and willful? I got a bit tired of the sounds I kept coming back to with it. Either I needed to spend more time learning how to deal with it, or give up and do something else. And I was curious about too many other things and in a habit of frequent gear trades. I traded for a Dreadbox Medusa, which was cool in its own way (but also not the best synth in the world) and that led me to the Novation Launchpad series (the Pro mk3 is serving me really well).

But the Lyra is super fun to play. The way it responds to touch is what led me to start trying more controllers, but its own behavior is unique -- you can get notes to bend as you play multiple ones thanks to the cross-modulation, though it's hard to dial in predictably. I also miss its flavor of polyphony; if the Strega/0-Ctrl combination was polyphonic that would rule.

Strega is a lot more versatile in its own right in terms of sound, with the waveshaper, filter, and the delay isn't quite as nuts -- it's noisy but has less of a tendency to turn immediately into crawly bug noises. Though it doesn't have its own distortion and can benefit from a bit of it.

Maybe someday I'll have to get a Lyra-8 again, and just be more patient with it.

I don't think the VST plugin does justice to it at all, honestly. It's a rough approximation, and the modulation doesn't sound the same and it definitely doesn't react the same way as an instrument.

agreed, the vst is definitely not the same I just thought it would give someone an idea of how the Lyra works.

I like really like that sub bass below audible sound it produces.
you call it garbage, I call it awesome.
In my buddies audiophile rig, it’s quite the experience. You’re entire body resonates.

So I finally got around to a NBD post. But here's a preview. We've been away in upstate New York at music camp, and I picked up my new Martin Keith on the way home. There are still a few bits to be adjusted, but it's already playing and sounding brilliant. It also passed cat customs.
