"Fender-shaped object", i.e. Fenders and Fender clones, source of all tired TB tropes.

I own one Squier Jaguar (not a proper FSO) and that's enough Fender for me.

This thread is my refuge from all that. I don't need to hear how much you love your P Bass just like everyone else, but I am interested in electronic gizmos and the sounds they make.

The thing about TB is there are a few threads that have taken on a life of their own, like this one. I view it as a tiny social media hub. You all are my friends, or at least pen pals.

I find MW useful for learning and information, but there are some very frequent, very toxic posters there. The Eurorack forum is deadly, though, if you just want to make music.

In synth world, I'm more of a Lines guy. Smaller thread, very heavily moderated to keep the toxic behaviour at bay, and touchy-feely in a way I like. I own no Monome gear and don't plan to buy any. I also dislike livecoding.

But there's a lot of ambient music on there.

I like Fender-shaped instruments, though the only Fender I actually own is my old fretless P that was my main bass for awhile in the 90s. I'm more into G&L as a refinement of the concept.

those forums are mod wiggler and lines?
i might look those up for some info even if I dont even own a « traditional » hardware synth.
i think i’m the only regular here that doesn’t, I cheat and sample (evil laughter)
i like so much music, more is more better

First of all thanks, that is high praise!

It started with the Hydrasynth...I ran it through an Instruo tanh and then Make Noise QPAS. To fatten up this particular patch I also ran the 1v/oct cv from the Hydrasynth into a Bubblesound uLFO in sine shaped mode. The uLFO went into another channel of the tanh and then into the Nano Font filter. I modulated the frequency of the QPAS and the volume of the uLFO using a couple of the ochd outs (with the speed of the ochd being modulated by the Triple Sloths). Reverb added in the DAW.

Then in the DAW I used Cardinal to make the distorted drone in F as a separate track.

Roughly mixed it all together and boom, Tetris.

TB was useful when I was getting started, but now not very. This thread is the reason I come back regularly.

ModWiggler is an extremely valuable resource, but yeah, it can be toxic. It hasn't been as bad lately as it used to be, but still. I think if they kicked out about 3 moderators and 15 regular users, deleted a couple of areas completely, and changed a handful of rules and moderation guidelines, it could be pretty pleasant. They have this rabid "no politics" rule which is unevenly applied and results in the place feeling more political and less welcoming.

Lines is pretty great. Sometimes the thread merging is a bit overzealous, but I'll take that in exchange for the much more relaxed atmosphere.

KvR is the one I've been on the longest. It's the TalkBass of DAWs and plugins (but with hardware and guitar sections too), substituting trance or techno for dad bands. The crowd is generally younger in age than here but still manage to be grumpy closed-minded old farts. There's lots more bickering than TB (sometimes threads explode into dozens of pages of just two people fighting), and a lot of people who are happy to explain things they obviously don't understand. I'm still there because there a few interesting people, a small crowd of Eurorack-and-DAW experimental/ambient folks, and once in a while there's a post that gets me thinking or a useful new product announcement or review or discussion etc.

To me, FSOs are like the white bread of bass guitars -- sort of a generic default that happens to be my least favorite. Bass guitar is an instrument where variety is not only possible, but exists in abundance, so why not go for something different and interesting? But I guess I've never really been into mainstream anything.

Oh yeah, but replace “gifted kid” with low talent that worked hard cuz he’s an idiot and choose music as his main “thing”.
And “home studio” with basement of horrors and crap.

Burnt out disappointment is on point tough!!!

Yes. Invalid Link Removed for Lines. Super touchy-feely but that really appeals to me. It's also small, like this crew, which I think is a good thing. There's a couple good sampling threads on Lines, so start there.

The Modwiggler "other gear" forum, along with "Production" techniques might have stuff you like. The Lyra-8 thread is there, but I fear you will find a lot of the kinds of L8 demos you hate. There are people on MW who work with primarily sample-based systems.

I don't think sampling is cheating at all. It's its own art.

I know this crew appreciates sampling, it’s just a bad running joke I’ve had with some friends to poke fun at the clueless mouth breathers.

Speaking of sampling, the sp404 mkII looks cool but also has many downsides.
They tried to pack too much crap into it when the main appeal of that series was “simplicity” and working with what you had. Forced you to think differently.

I gave in and am doing the more complex stuff in Ableton now.
Haven’t found a workflow yet to bounce back and forth with my SP and Live.
I’ll find a way.
