I like the pedal and love the degraded tape warble thing, but yeah…Somehow that vibe seems to belong exclusively to BOC these days

BTW. I’m still pretty stunned that my new MBP with the fancy M1 chip still has about the same CPU % usage with Ableton and my favorite plugins as my 2015 MBP.

I had to get a new one for compatibility with work stuff. I noticed that with Live also but other apps seem better. The other thing I noticed: installing and authorizing plugins took longer than anything else. All because they don’t trust their paying users. Bonkers.

Also, I now seem to own a fair bit of abandonware.

My favorite too! I just mean ‘that sound’ went from being a cool effect to, “Oh cool, that has a Boards of Canada vibe” big time.

Watched a couple other videos on the Generation Loss mk2 and I really kinda want one now. Sounds beautiful

That lo fi warble thing is all over the lo fi beats world. It's an overused trope, but it's a good one. I can still listen to this stuff in the background while relaxing all the time.

Thoughts, opinions??

During and after college I drove a Nissan Sentra - it was the most basic model - stick shift, no stereo - so my buddy installed a cheap tape player. I had to have a matchbox to hold the tapes in place so they wouldn't warble! I remember Dogman by King's X was particularly bad for some reason. So I kinda don't need a digital recreation of that sound lol

I do like the BOC aesthetic, this just isn't my thing. Actually, my Space Echo has a section of tape where this happens, so actually I live with it. Hopefully that section passes by in a nice way - not something I can control - gotta be open to the "accidents"!

It did get me thinking, though, about how I process stuff, particularly the Subharmonicon. I'm thinking of doing a MoogerFooger patch - the MF-101 low pass filter, with the frequency being slowly swept by the MF-103 phaser's LFO. Trying to resist the call of GAS... Work with what I've got... It's not like I'm playing much anyway... (That's the imaginary reverb I'm trying to resist...)...

Apparently the two brothers were kids in the 80s and spent time in Canada where their dad was doing contract work and they have fond memories of watching TV where station ID music and such was played on videotape. The intro to the first track on Tomorrow's Harvest sounds like it was lifted right from an 80s UHF channel.

Music Has the Right to Children is my personal favorite - I remember reading how they were contemplating how music would sound discovered in a dropped box in a field on tape (VHS?)

I was also reminded of one of my favorite electronic tracks - A New Error by Moderat - heard it probably around 2009 when it came out, I'd just moved to Oakland - they toured within the past year or so but pandemic and all, otherwise I would have gone...

Spent a couple of hours with the Syntakt tonight. It seems kinda cool. Not sure it’s a thousand bucks cool, but it’s cool. I’ve got a long way to yet and didn’t think much of the model:cycles the first day or two I had it, so I’ll keep chipping away at it for now.

I have it running along side my Octatrack, which I’m also practicing some new tricks on with an astounding lack of success so far

Been practicing for a gig in a few weeks but kind of in a rut regarding recording, so I decided to see if I could do a live single take with a Volca Bass and a few pedals just to push myself forward. Make the setup simple and focus on making some sounds. Now that I've got this down I may re-record it later for an album or something.
