Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

A thread someone posted at MW a few days ago had me curious to try a patch technique (using Beads for pulsar synthesis). I didn't like it that much but I did like a variation on it, and I started exploring that, found a bunch of cool sounds and then more or less stumbled into something worthy of recording.

And it just happens to transition well into some looped bits I recorded a couple of weeks ago. So now I have the start of my next album, and ideas about where the rest of that album can go.

It kind of broke a dry spell. I had been mostly just learning the Miezo and trying a bunch of stuff and rearranging my modular, but not getting very far creatively. Not a bad time really, but I just feel weird if I go a couple of weeks without committing finished tracks.

Sampling vs not sampling. For the longest time (many years) I was exclusively into sampling and wanted nothing to do with synthesis, mostly because I wasn’t up for the learning curve involved with synthesis But I loved sampling and still do. Nowadays I tend to do quite a bit of both. It’s all good fun at this point.

Oh, I bought an Elektron Syntakt. Figured I would eventually. I have a Model:Cycles, which is actually a shockingly good little box (and dirt cheap). I just always wished they’d come out with a more ‘pro’ version. I got it to simplify a live rig I’d like to put together. I’m starting a side project with a violinist…lots of electronic stuff mixed with live bass and violin. The idea is to start the set with nothing pre recorded or programmed and build everything up in real time. I’d been trying to do it with modular (and may at some point), but for now the plan is just the Syntakt and Octatrack, plus bass and fiddle. The Octatrack will be mainly a mixer/looper/fx box. We’ll see, but could be fun

Man. The Octatrack is on sale at Perfect Circuit. Can we not talk about it until the sale ends? I’m under a lot of stress these days and some retail therapy is super tempting.

BTW. I’m still pretty stunned that my new MBP with the fancy M1 chip still has about the same CPU % usage with Ableton and my favorite plugins as my 2015 MBP.

I can still run Live 9 with multiple tracks and native pluggins with no issue on a 2009 mac 32 bit 8 gig of ram.

Recorded a session with 16 ins (all mic’s)
Zero issues, no crashes no glitches before the fubar on that old crap laptop

hard to avoid a computer these days.

i find them pretty useful. a lot of the music i’ve done over the last 40 (!) years would be damn-near impossible without them.

can they do evil in the wrong hands, you betcha.

Agreed, they make many things much easier and well some tasks wall punching ta cu lar.

Defective drivers anyone!?!?
Crashes the DAW on boot, loose 6 hours on the interweb to find out that the code for version 1.0.6 was “faulty” replaced one month later with 1.0.6b without any news, mails nothings.

I had fun with the Cycles for a while. It was good to be able to just bash out some beats on the living room sofa, in contrast to my "serious" process of making ambient stuff surrounded by gear. The synth engine is pretty good if lacking in features (attack time for envelopes, more than one LFO, etc.) I'd probably be into the Digitone, if I needed another box of bleeps and bloops, which I don't really.

But getting into bass gave me a different alternative to the "serious" stuff -- practicing/noodling, and with the UBass I can also go somewhere else and do that acoustically. So I wasn't using the Cycles as much.

Did a quick jam playing bass through an Instruo Arbhar into Mimeophon. Added a bit of percussion and called it a day. Really love the Arbhar a whole lot
