Great stuff. It reminds me that one of these days I'd like to get a portable rig I could bring damn near anywhere. (The Hydrasynth Explorer may be great for sonic exploration, but it's not "throw in the backpack and go" size.)
The Volca synths have been a godsend for this sort of stuff, and my favorite among them is the Volca Bass. Any pedals must also be able to run on batteries, as well as the recorder, of course. The three pieces of gear I usually pack are a Volca, one or two pedals, and the Korg SR-1 recorder, as well as some earbuds or headphones. All of this fits in a small case that fits in my carry-on luggage.
I actually saw this on YouTube in my subscriptions which I normally don't check but I think I was procrastinating! Nice to hear more detail on how it was recorded. Did you do it at night while star-viewing?
It’s the opposite: I want envelopes that can be tempo synced. Hydrasynth is the only one I know of with that trick. I sent in a feature request for the Micromonsta 2 and the maker said “probably not” and then “actually that is an interesting idea.”
Other news: ProTools hell is over. Masters are done. I’m going to export stems in case I get the insane desire to do a remix. Which I won’t.
Latest acquisition is a pair of K&M monitor stands. I set them up tonight and listened to a bunch of stuff. I wish I got them sooner. I also tried a pair of Gators but it was no contest so the Gators go back. Utilities and furniture are boring but always improve my life.
I wish! I did it during the day and came back at night to try to view stars, but broken clouds rolled through, making it hit or miss. I don't know quite how I'd operate this gear in the dark, though, and the other astronomers would yell at me for having lights on anyway. It's one of those places where they take night vision seriously and lighting up a flashlight or a cellphone is a good way to draw hate on yourself.

what are the main feature differences between the desktop and the Explorer?
(other than the keys, buttons.)
The big one for me is that the Desktop has CV inputs. (To that point, I think the Explorer is the only Hydrasynth without CV inputs, but don't quote me on that.) In use, I've also found that I like having the bigger control layout of the Desktop when it comes to making a patch. It's not a must since they're the same engine, but it's a nice quality of life thing.

desktop has polyphonic aftertouch (pat) buttons/pads
explorer has pat mini (?) keys
so both have pat capabilities. if you don’t need keys, the desktop is cool (though i don’t recall it the pads *send* pat).

I recently plunged back into ambient and thought I could use phat synth tones, arpeggiators and LFOs. In other words, it was time to shop for an analog (or analog style) performance synth.
I'm fortunate enough that this kind of synth is fashionable. Synth people are getting a bit bored about software synthesis, they miss tweaking knobs and stuff.
They sell well and they're pretty cheap, there's a myriad of incredible electronic instruments under 500 bucks. I ended with a phenomenal Arturia Microfreak. Incredible what it offers for its price. Anyway.
In my search, I stumbled upon Korg's Nu-Tekt NTS-1 which his nothing short of incredible and super available. You can even trick the arpeggiator into playing chords.
I just made a thread about it.

i had a pod64x, sold cause, ya know, needed more room. solid. x is deeper, afaik, so better for deeper modules.

For now, I’m finding that some days I don’t want to break out the whole rack. The Euro Zoia has a case Empress designed but those pods look like they might be more interesting for some flexibility in connecting bass/euro/computer sections.
I have a Pod60, the shallow one. It's serving me pretty well as an overflow case. The shallow depth means there's not even room to add a floating bus cable to get extra power headers, but the slightly deeper X series probably doesn't have that issue.
I started with a TipTop Happy Ending kit and put it in a cheap desktop rack. The power supply is not very good -- I'd probably look at other options. The Mantis though is quite good (and sort of my default recommendation for a starting size).
Oh yeah and I brought out the EHX Freeze. It is a marvellous pedal for ambient, simple and straight to the point. It's been around for a while so people can forget about it.

I had one for a minute and didn't like it. It is probably more about how I play and what I wanted to "do with it." The Empress Reverb pedal has a firmware update that does a very similar function, which is why I flipped my Freeze as fast as I did.
