Not at all! And when you find similarly so-so viral ambient music about cancer, I for one am here for it.
I did an ambient piece about paralysis. Performed it live a few times. One of my personal favorites. Not a lot of other paralyzed people in the crowd.
I kept it under 90 minutes.

On a random tangent… I kind of ignored slipknots new album… but after the second full listen, there’s a lot of effects and additives compared to the last few albums that just make it go back to their old self titled / Iowa albums of sounding “fuller / denser”.
Randomly I sold my kangra fuzz / filter mainly cos I kept stomping on the wrong switch of the two cos they are so close together— now wanting it back to see if can use it more for fun effects / dub sounds. I assume I’m not the first person to sell and re buy the same pedal! Anyway back to your regular synth stuff

Well, I am full of self-indulgent crap. I just lack the overrated part. One more piece of the puzzle and I'm a rock star.
Experimenting with the signal chain tonight. I’m running the Empress Reverb modulation engines (chorus, flanger, trem) into a delay and reverb. It’s getting a nice pad sound. I’ll try to record a clip soon. I don’t usually pop the modulation in pre delay+reverb but this is working.
Using bass or synth as an input?
I've been able to do spacy sounds and pads using bass and effects, my ongoing ambient bass quest is to see if I can't make sequenced sounds with a bass that don't just sound like somebody playing a bass quickly. Even the best tracking synth pedals seem to get mushy if you try to play too fast, haven't been able to get a quick-enough attack yet. Maybe I should just try using an octave pedal...
I intended to say self indulgent in a pejorative way, I read some interviews and he is really full of himself IMO.
But hey, I'm a nobody in his basement lab, at least he got some stuff out there......pretty sure he got his money's worth on that vinyl crackle VST he bought.
tbh, it’s all “self-indulgent, pretentious crap” until enough people like it so somehow it “isn’t”
A few years ago somebody in some TB thread made the statement that everyone who does this has a least a little bit of ego or self-indulgence or the like going on. I don't remember the exact wording, but I do remember a lot of people got upset over it. I think there's some truth to it though. It takes a bit of awareness-lacking guts to put yourself out there by publishing your own music or getting on a stage to perform in public. Especially since many of us are not professional or well-trained musicians and are kind of just winging it. I guess as long as we don't let ourselves get too much up our own butts about it it's fine.
imo, the act of getting on stage, or publishing a work (writing, music, painting, etc.) is pretty much pretentious in that one thinks one has something to offer that other humans might want to (should?) hear/read/see.
btw, some of my favorite stuff at any given time is music/art that is not made by professional/trained people in the arts.
anybody here into dusttodigital on instagram? pretty amazing stuff the has a lot of normal people creating beautiful, heartfelt music.

Couldn’t not agree more, so many of the so called “trained” musicians are full of $h1t. (Not all but definitely a good proportion)
I never regretted quitting the last year of my Bachelors degree in jazz interpretation.
The elitism was nauseating, fake people with fake playing (read no emotion)
So I went back to the basics, study why I loved music in the 1st place on my own. Pure raw emotional connections with the art.
I didn’t have much talent but I had the drive and passion that’s for damn sure.
