Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

I hope so. I've done a lot of thinking about how different it is this time around. I hope it's a new normal, and I can get out two good releases a year. I just need to learn how to be more productive in summer, as I'm generally exhausted every night from biking and other outdoor excursions. And beer. Lots of beer.

Oh, so much beer in the summer. Living in Vermont, it's hard for it not to be that way, as we have some of the best damn beer in the world, here.

this is why i keep my consumption to four days a week (that sound like a lot?) and then not until later in the evening. otherwise i'm not sharp enough.

My main gig lately is also my favorite brewery, which is disturbingly close to my home. So it's not just summer here. In the last couple of months I've begun to mentally track my consumption and keep an eye on myself. Not getting any younger and all that.

LOL see my first paragraph.

I sort of jest. I've dropped about 30 pounds in the last year and a half, and a lot of that has to do with dialing back the beer (and biking about 100 miles a week at least, which is hard to do when you're drunk).

my spouse drinks maybe once or twice *a year*, so four times a week seems like a lot in our household.

and i didn't mention it's probably gonna be both beer and tequila on certain nights . . . but as you say, getting older. not sure i should handle much at all these days.
I don't remember the last time I qualified as 'drunk'. Not so much fun anymore. Feel good for about an hour and the rest of the night's shot.

TB is like social media, what with the FOMO and people putting their best faces forward and all. Don't worry, you guys are just like the rest of us: cycles of feast and famine.
Eh, actually I think TB (or at least our little group here) isn't like FB, as we're some of the most self-deprecating people I've ever encountered online. We're also very supportive of each other. Half of what we do here seems to be sharing what we've done and the other half (almost always from the same people in the first half) is us being hard on ourselves for not producing/producing crap/fill in the blank with your latest musical complaint about yourself.

And gear. Oh so much gear.

Regular TB is like Facebook, with P-bass fetishization, complaining about the youngs, and dad-band woes being the equivalent of selfies, stupid conspiracy rants and baby/dinner pics. All of which I have zero interest in.

Not that I want one but to be fair, I actually kind of like a good P bass. It's a solid, proven design that usually sounds pretty good. But TalkBass makes me want to hate them. :roflmao:
Oh, I'm not slagging P's - they're classic, I'm slagging the obsession with P's that some people have, as though there are no other options, or as though they lack any imagination, or as though nothing happened in bass design after it worth mentioning. If I were playing old-school stuff, I'd likely want one, too. I'm just a modern, hifi, coffee-table bass kinda guy. My Stingray is about as old-school as I'm gonna get.

I'm normally pretty prolific with releases and stuff but I feel like once I get the next one done, it's time to switch gears for a bit.

I need to really work on practicing the bass, which I've neglected for various valid and not-so-valid reasons. But I also want to do some deeper study of specific pieces of gear where I feel like I've been coasting a bit.

WMD Synchrodyne for instance... there's a lot about it I don't understand, and a lot of unpredictable/unstable behavior that I think I could handle better if I went beyond scratching the surface. And even a lot of simpler possibilities I just haven't tried yet (e.g. what if I used it just for distortion and left the filter wide open?)

Mutable Instruments Beads too. I wrote a guide for it with a bunch of patch ideas, which is far from complete, but I don't even use most of those ideas. I just have a few specific ways I use it and I'm nowhere near taking advantage of its potential.

Shapeshifter. I bought it as a sort of hybrid of my two favorite oscillators at the time, but my tastes have changed some, and a lot of what I have been using it for is covered by other gear. It also has a bunch of features I don't use that much. Is it still really "my favorite oscillator" or should I move it along too?

The BrutePest setup is coming together and it also deserves some time to dig into it the way I have the Strega, at least.

(Probably I'll start itching to get back to recording stuff after a few weeks at most, and that's OK too. As long as I keep getting that bass practice in...)

I have no idea how, but I manage to have that balance. Some nights I sit on the couch with a headphone amp and practice for 3 hours, other times it's studio time.

I’m looking at that XAOC multiFX module. I see several sites/demos talking about it being based on the “spin” chip. Apparently several builders use this chip and it has some known pros/cons. Anyone here familiar with the spin chip? Best I could find so far is a passing statement that it’s also used in the ALM multiFX and Happy Nerding’s module. There was a comment in a video about some issues with clocking delay times.

Edit - found this
What pedals use the FV-1 chip ?

It's an older chip and can't do a ton of fancy DSP stuff with a lot of oversampling etc. But it all comes down to the skill of whoever writes the algorithms. The Happy Nerding delays and reverbs were really musical IMHO.

The thing about clocked delays with it is you have to give up an input and a knob for the sync, so that's one less parameter you can control. Maybe clock multiplier and feedback, but not a tone control.

Busted amp is dead, not worth fixing.
Power amp sent F+$’kn DC into my cab and screwed up all the speakers

Amp, garbage/sledge hammer time

Cab, waiting on the bill. I have a bad feeling……

Now, find new back up and sell crap to found repairs.
