Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

Put the euro Zoia to work today. I watched a tutorial on making techno rumble sounds using a kick through reverb and a LPF controlled by a side chain comp envelope. I made a similar chain with an onset detector triggering an ADSR envelope that opens and closes the rumble reverb signal blended back with the dry sound. It all (wet+dry) passes through a clipping/EQ/limiting chain. Nothing amazingly unique was created, but something useable was, so I’m calling it a productive day.

Say what?!

hey everyone. Sorry to be relatively quiet. I was on vacation last week and came back to the news that my mom is in the hospital, so it's been a bit of a thing.

I'm writing to thank @ugly_bassplayer for the pick advice and to follow up. I've been doing the dad rock band's practices entirely with a pick which has totally alleviated right hand finger pain. The exercises have helped.

I think my main problem was relaxing my hand, and I'm now much better at doing that, which means playing with a pick for 2 solid hours is no long a problem. EXCEPT for palm muting. For some reason my hand always tightens up when I do it. Any suggestions there?

Thanks for the kind words, I have plenty more exercises if you need them.

re:
Palm mute with a pick
Since it’s way bigger than a guitar, palm muting requires more strength on a bass….way more.
It’s very difficult to stay relaxed.
My few tips would be regular breathing and not lifting the shoulders when doing this.
Try to hold pick firmly but not to tight, this is the main reason for tension and fatigue.
Try not to “push down” too hard on the strings with right hand palm, also an important source of tension.

palm mute with a pick is definitely on my “gotta work really hard on that to not suck list”
So take my advice with that in mind

thoughts go out to your mom
Take care

Family in the hospital is demanding. I've had an ongoing issue for the last several months and it has nearly obliterated my time and energy for creative pursuits. Hope it all resolves quickly and easily.
