Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

Also a 'new drummer converted to the Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural love fest' post.

My band, where the guitar player and I have silly MIDI controlled pedalboards with a Zoia, SY-200ses, but of Source Audio offerings, etc., have inspired our drummer to add some electronics on to his acoustic kit. We tested some options and got a Keith McMillen Bop Pad. He has some particular interest in adding found field recorded type percussion, and glitchy stuff, which we've overdubbed a good bit of in a studio setting. After looking at options, he is getting a Elektron Model Samples to go with the Bop Pad. The Bop Pad has some radius cc abilities and he is thinking that will be nice to add some expression to the samples.

cool. i don’t know anything about the mcmillen, but there was something korg (pretty sure) did that also allowed for hitting the surface in different areas (like a teal drum head) that a drummer i played with used.

What they did was release a product with the word "tosser" in the name, which is hilarious and possibly dumb if my knowledge of British English slang is up to par.

That’s the problem with international marketing.

Do any of you Eurorack heads have opinions on ring modulators? I’m looking at a Moddemix but I’m open to other ideas. I have one already in a Disting mk1 so I’m looking for more features / interesting sound. When I started out I had a Synth Tech e520 which had a fantastic sounding ring modulator but it was only with their own modulator waveforms.

the modemix can do more than just the ring modish thing. pretty sure walker farrell does a demo on it on the mn channel. might be worth looking at that.

I personally didn't quite get along with ModDemix, due that little distortion kink right around 0V... sometimes it sounded great, but sometimes it's not what I wanted. It does have a few interesting patch possibilities though.

I tend to use Blinds or Ana for my occasional ringmod needs. Both of them have a lot of other utility besides. Though sometimes I'll use the ringmod combo mode on Shapeshifter, or the Moogerfooger plugin.

I got my Loci stand and set up the "BrutePest" station, which I realized after the fact is all analog synthesis, so no wonder it has such a different vibe from the main rack.

(That's NSI Inertia in there with the West Pest. I have an Oversynth overlay on the way to make the Pest less ugly, should arrive any day now.)

I'm thinking about putting a Befaco A*B+C in the remaining space in that Pod60. It can act as a 2:1 mixer with CV controls, crossfader, and ring modulator. But I'm holding off to see if this setup gives the Inertia new life or if I want to drop that for something smaller and simpler.

Meanwhile I have an Ataraxic Iteritas on the way for the main case. It's the only Noise Engineering oscillator I haven't tried (aside from the more basic Sinc Iter) and it seems like it has a lot of potential. The main case really doesn't need more utiltiies, more modulation, more controllers, another filter etc. and I'm really well covered on FX so I might as well go for something fun, right?

I picked up a couple of things today.

Hoover is a mathrockish band local to me, or they were, anyway. Apparently they were active in the 90s and since then occasionally get together for a show here and there, judging by what I find of them on youtube.

I’ve been thinking about this more: could you say a bit more about the specific issues you found with it? What did it stop you doing, musically, that you wanted to do? I am sort of inclined to go for “dirty” rm rather than clean. I tend to like harmonic distortion on my sounds, and I’m looking to use it for subtle beating and feedback patches more than robot and Star Wars sounds, so it’s possible that 0v irregularity could add interest or frustration.

you can use it as a dirty vca as well.

It's been about 4-5 years so I don't remember that specifically. I did have the older version of it which had a little bit different normaling and the Strength knobs didn't act as attenuators for the CV inputs, which I remember leading to some frustration not being able to replicate cool patches people were doing with it.

For the distortion, I think my issue was it felt backwards from overdrive, where quieter signals distorted more than louder ones. It's a cool effect sometimes but I wasn't usually looking for that. It's possible at the time, I didn't have any conventional VCAs and was trying to use ModDemix as a substitute.

Watching that video and skipping around a bit in others, I suspect I'd get more out of it now than I did then.

One thing I'm finding with the BrutePest is I really want a gain boost. The WP's main output is quieter than most other levels, and the MB's Ext in also seems to be a bit quiet. Turns out A*B+C can do that, since the B attenuverter goes from -2.0 to +2.0. That brings me one step closer to just getting one.

Played around with the setup a bit this morning. The delay is Wavesfactory Echo Cat.

@JES

gotta thanks you foe bringing up the modemix.

looked through those walker vids and patched along and then tried the basic concept with a morphagene i’ve been trying plus carrier from xpo into modemix, etc. got something that i like pretty well that seems like it might be a good part of “something.”

slow chords become buzzy chimes.

plan on starting new stuff this xoming week. (just finished a big piece, so need a break).
