Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

Agree, seems like it would be a great live experience. The talking I just found to be standard composer talk.

I’m curious if people here listen to any music-related podcasts. My interest in Buchla had led me to Source of Uncertainty, which I like. I’ve also listened to some Why We Bleep and a few others. Sometimes I feel like this hosts talk too much and should let the guests say what they have to say, but maybe some people listen for the hosts.

major pet peeve of mine is any host/interviewer that likes the sound of his own voice too much.
Makes me turn off immediately.

unfortunately I don’t have the time to listen to podcasts but the singer in my band is a huge podcast listener. From history to music to philosophy…..

I was really not into them for a long time, and then in the last couple years found they're good for in-between settings where music is less ideal: long drives, airplane rides, etc., where I'd normally be cranking the music to hear a voice. Sometimes long walks too. I even listen to them sometimes while cooking now.

Agree with the point about the hosts. I guess I live with it when I want to hear the guest. But sometimes it's kind of gross. Mylar Melodies talked a LOT more when interviewing Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith than Tony Rolando. I wonder what the difference could possibly be?

Hi all!

I wondered if anyone had experience with the Maneco Labs Small Nimbus?

I’ve been lusting after a Microcosm for some time, but the cost is prohibitive. Using a mix of arpeggiators, modulation, stacked delays and reverb I’ve got close enough to subdue the urge to sell my kidney to buy one, but the one piece of the puzzle I was missing was a granular delay. I was pretty sold on the Red Panda Particle 2 being the thing that would complete my set up, but this has got me interested.

The system it’s based on (Mutable Instruments Clouds) is pretty powerful and well respected, making it an impressive pedal on paper. But, and it’s a big but, I can find pretty much zero real world feedback on how it performs.

So, anyone had hands on?

Almost never ...which is weird, because I enjoy talking about music nearly as much as I enjoy composing & performing music. But something about listening to people talking about music rarely bubbles up towards the top of the personal priorities list. I have at least a dozen podcasts, videos, audio files etc. bookmarked in my browser for future reference because something in the topic sounded like it would be appealing...and yet I can never bring myself to say "ooh, now would be a great time to listen to this!" I think I'd rather read what musicians have to say, and/or just listen to their music.

I found a cool way to use this "Glo the Polyphonic Whale" thing. Since it has an input jack for microphones or line in, I can plug a synth into it and use it as an effect. It's very prominent throughout this track, especially at the beginning.

So finally managed to have a play with the afterneath… and it is glorious. Someone said to treat it more like a delay and that helped but it gets so cavernous..
Also found out by accident can use the slo like an actual “freeze” capture in the dream mode with the second foot switch. Pretty happy to now have a combined band / ambient mess around with board

I want to incorporate synth sounds in my band but I want to keep things simple.
(Read I don’t want to carry around a hardware synth, or a soft synth iPad combo. I already run 2 amps. )

Thank you for any opinions/pros cons

Not really looking at the C4, I don’t want to connect to a computer on a gig to EQ a sound that needs tweaking.

No direct experience but now I'm watching demos.
@hieronymous has expedience with the Grone Drone from Meneco.

Catching up on some recent audio posts. Thanks for sharing!

I've been working on a few ideas with a friend, including trying to capture hardware effects in Ableton with prerecorded samples.

I also did a thing that's going to push me to sell off a few other things. Thing updates will be available as they become available.

I’d an Enzo but moved it on.
It was incredibly frustrating in general and was a money pit if you wanted to save and recall sounds. Also the volumes were all over the place and there was no gain control.
There were a lot of very questionable design decisions.
The dry mode was actually a lot better. It was a decent multi effects unit that I would have held on to if it weren’t for the design.

There was really only two Synth sounds. A poly-synth and a mono-synth.
The poly and arpegiator were fairly unusable and my DIY bit commander did a similar monosynth sound to it but far better/meatier.

The best anyone can say about synth pedals on bass, generally, is that they track OK or that the menu isn’t too terrible to navigate.
They never sound good.
Like I couldn’t think of a track with one on it.

The only bass synth(ish) sound I think works is the standard octave, filter, fuzz combo in various forms.
I like that sound because it’s its own thing and would stand its ground on a track—not just as a poor man’s synth.

For affordable great bass synth tones the Behringer Model D could be fun live.

Did I mention how annoying it is (as an amateur/hobbyist) to listen to a mix on headphones and monitors then play the same mix through a phone speaker and find the “slight” reverb and delay sounds get compressed and level up from ambient to overwhelming?

*** Please note, having an acceptable mix for playback on phone speakers is a goal on this project for reasons.

On my monitor mix I’ve an eq saved with a load of low and high rolled off to compare every now and again in mono to make sure it’s ok on phones etc

I have had fun with the Boss SY-1 and a Triode Pedals Leviathan filter. I've also used this pedal on some of my other tracks. If you expect a pedal to sound like a traditional keyboard synth you're going to have a hard time, but if you accept it for what it is you may be able to make it work for you. I am not trying to be too serious though, it's all fun.
