Besides, everyone knows you don't need to know how to play guitar if you're doing ambient pedalboard stuff.
I don't know how to play anything (more correctly, I just suck at it mostly), and I manage to fake my way through hour and a half long sets with multiple synths and a bass or guitar. Drown anything in enough reverb and it becomes "ambient".
Through scrap metal down some stairs add a ton of distortion and a tape deck
Boom instant music concrète/textural noise.
Okay, so I watched a few more Microcosm videos and took it off the board and just sat on the couch last night with it and the 6 string until about 2 am. It's actually pretty amazing and has a ton of potential. I think my initial reactions were tainted by a) I was sitting on the floor next to the board, I was tired and my broken ankle was killing me b) I barely RTFM. I had also assumed it reset to specific knob positions on the different algorithms as you switched to them. It doesn't, except for your own presets, so half the time I had the filter too closed or the verb too high.
Once I figured that out and a few other things, I was making those sounds I hadn't made before, which is the whole point of a 400+ pedal, isn't it? I got so into it, I only got through the first set of algos.

I saw Peter Gabriel last night! Last time I saw him was 1986 in Japan - was so cool to see him once again with Tony Levin, Reeves Gabrel and Manu Katché. I'm really liking his new material - I even subscribed to him on Bandcamp! One of the new songs had some nice trading-fours b/n synth bass and Levin on Stick. Actually, there's continuity with the Robert Rich album I bought recently (which arrived - signed by the artist for free!) - the PG song i/o talks about how the clear distinction we feel between ourselves and the outside world is actually much more permeable, with material going in and out all the time - and was inspired by the input & output jacks on "electrical equipment."
The visuals were amazing, as was the rest of the band. The only problems were that the upper balcony at the venue (Chase Center in SF) is raked so steeply that both my wife and I were kind of freaking out - I have a touch of acrophobia, this place definitely triggers it! And then we tried to leave before the second encore, as did many others - but a fight broke out right in front of me! I did my best to try and protect the woman who was being attacked but my wife was freaking out so we finally left. Who the f**k gets in a fight at a PETER GABRIEL concert?!! But I'm trying not to think about that, and just enjoying the memory of the show.

the fight thing seems really odd

You are right! Duh, incomplete Google search on my part - couldn't remember his name!
The fight was a guy attacking a woman, claiming she spit in his face. It erupted right in front of me as I was going down the stairs - fortunately my wife had just passed. A friend of mine went to Power Trip last weekend - 3 nights of 6 metal & rock bands (G'n'R, AC/DC, Metallica, Tool, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest) and saw zero fights - I go to Peter Gabriel and get embroiled in one?!!
The Microcosm has been on my I'm Really Curious list for 3 or 4 years now, but every time I start to think "maybe I should just bite the bullet" I look at all the other loopers/ambient fog generators I currently own and think my time would be better spent learning more nuances of the pedals I already spent money on. But a guitarist I work alot with got a Microcosm within the past year, and he admits it took him a long time to warm up to it. At first he thought it was just blurring/smearing everything with undifferentiated halos & goo. But he's come to really love it, once he spent more time with it.

I have really gravitated in this direction and I’m much happier. Menu diving stuff is fine for set and forget. Or if an interface is brilliantly designed. But those are rare.
Also, I am following the Microcosm discussion with interest.
The Infinite Jets was also interesting to me. I haven't thought of these pedals in a while. Probably because they are so expensive, take up lots of space, and to be honest, some of the fancier pedals make me wonder if I'm cheating a bit. Maybe that's dumb; we use technology to make new sounds all the time, but you know...not everything in my brain makes sense.

I saw this show in Boston a few weeks ago, it was pretty amazing. I like some of the i/o material, some of it's a bit uninteresting to me but some of it's amazing (like Road to Joy and Four Kinds of Horses). But I think it was awesome that Pete had over half the show be the new stuff instead of the greatest hits stuff that 99 percent of concertgoers seem to demand from older acts. The visuals were pretty amazing, especially on Growing Up, which is one of my fave PG tunes.
And the band was top notch, of course.
