Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

Nero Bellum & Tim Skold have a project I just learned about called Not My God and they’re doing a short first & final tour with Snakes of Russia opening. They didn’t play Los Angeles so I missed my shot. It’s happening over the next couple of weeks so if this is up your alley then look for dates.

Interesting. I'm guessing they get compared to NIN and Manson a lot. Also, the newer Gary Numan stuff ventures into this territory.

Doh - missed that one! Wasn't in the books though, I prefer not to travel to SF for shows (I'm in Oakland) - I'm liking the video though - just two people? Would be cool to see live!

If I sent inserts from the track with the synth I want to use to the pedal, could I then send the pedal outs to another track where I could mix in just the wet signal? I'm kind of a moron when it comes to routing things (hence, no modular), and I know y'all got this stuff down good.

In short, yes.

Depending on how those inserts are wired, you may need to be cautious re: what type of cables you use. If the inserts are on a single TRS jack where the Send and Receive on on that same jack, you only want the Send, which means you want to use a TS plug and only push it partway into the jack, so that it engages with the Send but doesn;t short out the Return of the jack.

otoh, if the mixer has separate Send and Return jacks, just use the Send jack to feed your pedal, and plug the pedal's output(s) into the input of any other mixer input channels, and Bob's yer uncle.

Figuring out some new sequencer tricks and getting into weirder territory with the fairly “straightforward” Erica Black (vs something like the Bloom).

I figured out a “bug” that was really my misunderstanding of sequencing steps and how sequencing “reset” functions work. There’s a Probability gate function per step. You can set it to 50% and then there’s a 50% change the gate will fire, based on a coin flip each time that gate is reached (so it doesn’t necessarily alternate on/off). There’s also a 1/2 Probability which means 1 of every 2 times that step is reached the gate will fire. This should be a sequential on/off pattern but it wasn’t doing that for me. Then I realized there is a master sequence length and a track sequence length. If the master is 16 steps and the track is 16 steps then there’s an invisible/inaudible reset after each 16 steps. So if I set the master to 32 steps and the track to 16 steps THEN the track will cycle twice before a reset occurs and the 1/2 alternating on/off for a specific step will happen.

Where it gets interesting (complicated) is running say a 64 step master and a 5 step track with a 7/8 Probability. I don’t listen to enough calculus metal to keep that pattern straight in my head :)

I kinda figure here’s as good a place to ask as any…

I play my fiver set to beadg. I’ve tried some octave stuff over the years (both up and down) and never really had that much use for them except harmony up with distortion sounds massive…
But keep coming back to mini analogue octave down pedals (just so they will fit on my board).
Does anyone here use them for that fake sub / dub sounds or to start a synthy chain sound (ie octaver, fuzz, modulation etc)

I’ve tried the malekko downer, the eqd bit commander, bass whammy, boss ps3…

but keep looking at the mxr vintage bass octave haha :)

I’ve had an eye on octave pedals for a bit. I’m also curious. I’ve been considering the KMA Queequeg 2, the MXR Poly Blue Octave, and the GojiraFX Octave pedals. I’m open to suggestions.

i have an old iron ether subterranea, which i just used on a gig two weeks ago for the first time in forever (remember that thing about keeping pedals around for too long? sometimes it’s useful!)

i like it pretty well. does some nice things as it also has synth voices at unison and octave down (allowed me to do a couple of different sounds with one pedal with minimal changes). i imagine they’re ridiculously expensive now (?).

since tim lefebvre uses them extensively to get his sound (not dub necessarily), you might want to look at what he uses. he’s basically got signature models of the things.

anyway, i’m not a connoisseur, but that’s my take.

There's going to be an OCTABVRE release in November - he's been doing weird limited releases, the last one (Proton?) you had to buy an active onboard eq module or something so I passed - not sure what the deal will be this time.

3 LEAF AUDIO

I've always been tempted but never jumped on one of these. I have the M288 Bass Octave Deluxe - I like it but I'm not too fussy. I haven't really used just the octave by itself so can't say much.

Speaking of Iron Ether, this thing looks cool (though expensive and not in stock): Subterrograph – Iron Ether

3leaf and Iron Ether prices atm are completely ridiculous.

Now it’s gonna be an internet fist fight to get those few pedals from 3leaf.
Like the Broughton cult.

off lawn now

i get that. (someone on my local cl has an oxide up for $400!)

luckily i got my ie stuff a long time ago (some 15 years ago? is that possible? i heard an old live gig from 2008 that sounds like i’m using a frantibit).

as it is, i want to move some of my ie stuff at some point. tried on my local cl, but no luck so far.
Sell the IE stuff on TB at “reasonable prices (below ridiculous collector non player prices) and imo they will sell for sure.

Maybe you could offer it here first? Though that might break some TB rule...

i have to renew my tb membership that allows me to post in the classifieds. my main thing is i’m loathe to ship (lazy).

btw, anyone else interested in the new redpanda ring mod that’s supposed to his this fall?
Trade your crazy expensive EI for some crazy overpriced 3leaf stuff, win win.

;)

You inquiring about the ring mod, aren’t you the regular on this thread that loathes ring mods??
links to new pedal?
Imo, the last really cool Red Panda release was the Particle 2.
Ymmv, imo….etc
Unless it’s @Bob_Ross that hates ring mods?
