Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

OK, this is better - playing bass with my koto player Brian Wong for the first time - well, we played a little bit during soundcheck. I made a much better mix with the audio tracks I recorded - unfortunately syncing to the video is a hassle (since iPhone is a weird variable frame rate) but wanted to put this out on Halloween - Obake means ghost in Japanese!

Thanks! I was so much more relaxed and open when playing with Brian (vs. my previous solo set) - I love how stuff just happens - I know that I wasn't thinking, "OK, now's the part where we hit this note together" - I also know that I wasn't necessarily hearing individual notes he was playing, it's more like I'm able to float on the current of his playing and help steer things a little bit with my 5-string oar (to beat a metaphor to death!)

Thanks - yeah, we definitely hit it off - this is only the third time playing together, and the first time I played bass with him.
It was held in a gym at one of the local Buddhist temples - Spider Man is the son of the resident minister, one of my colleagues who I have known for a long time - he is a DJ (the dad) and we have jammed in the past, in fact, we were supposed to jam at the end of this performance but I forgot!
Anyway, during soundcheck I had shown his son (Spider Man) the bass pedals, so while we were playing he came up and wanted to "help" - fortunately he gave up pretty quick...

I spent Halloween droning with my eurorack rig (mostly the 4MS Ensemble and some delay and reverb). The sounds weren't as spooky as I hoped for, but they were pretty good. I hope my neighbors appreciated the effort

Not this year. Now that covid restrictions have been lifted and we don't have to isolate my buddy and I simply opted to silently ignore the opportunity to do anything online or in person
I did walk the neighborhood to see the decorations. My neighbors have quite the budget for such things and go all out. I almost brought my field recorder to sample the sounds of the night. I mostly wanted the kids screaming, but there was a lot of parents parenting and traffic. So I just kept singing to myself "candy apples and razor blades, little dead soon in graves, i remember halloween!"

I just stayed in, watched the first episode of "Pluto" (an anime murder mystery with robots, and an old film score composer who hates having machines involved in music which gave me some chuckles), played video games, and traded Halloween music playlists with my wife. We had a few things in common and a few where we said "why didn't I think of that one?"
I appreciate that at about the 7:00 mark in the video we get both dual-pedal action and her playing on the piano really resembles some of the stuff Brian does on the koto!
My TAs and I dressed up for my lecture course and brought candy. The students were happy and slightly amped.
Tuesday night is dad rock band practice, and I am happy to report that I am able to do more and more palm muting without wrist fatigue.
I am, however, otherwise rather floored with exhaustion after two major grant applications and travel, so have been imagining 6u 104hp 4-voice Eurorack setups by rearranging my modules in modulargrid (there's always one additional that I "need") when I have a quiet moment alone. This is may or may not be healthy or wise but it's where I'm at.

That's a great costume idea if I can figure out the visual joke to go with it.
We all decided to go as different kinds of cats. My costume was pretty simple -- face paint, cat ears, black clothes but it made the students happy.

luckily for them, they can go see see kiss’ “end of the road” final tour.
and i bet that, like the ramones, there are people who wear the t-shirt who have never heard the band.
One of my biggest regrets is never getting to see the Ramones play live.
For me at least, they are one of the most important bands in the history of rock or punk or whatever you want to call it.
I stand firmly behind this statement. Dee Dee is easily in my top players of all time, he's basically the reason I picked up an instrument in the 1st place and I'm sure that this is far from an isolated case. They encouraged countless "losers" and "no talent outcasts" to start bands with crap instruments in a dirty basement/garage.
And I for sure am proudly one of those said losers.
