Looove the sound of the P90 and fretless. Less “mwah” but it’s got something else.
I decided to strap the highest four of a six string set on my short scale. Tuned it BEAD an octave up from standard fiver tuning. I can’t say I hate this through some dirt, delay, and reverb.
that’s cool, but why not just do it as A-C? less string tension and some baritones are actually tuned woth a low A.
Started A-C but the strings were a tad lower tension than I wanted and I also got buzzing since I didn’t do a full setup. Tuning up was a quick hack fix.
I also now have the BEAD parallel fingering and orientation from my 5 string. I’m not used to a C string so I wasn’t sure how that would feel in my head. This seemed like a natural adjustment.
all that makes sense. if the tension was bad, best to do what you did. i had just envisioned a really tight B string.
I thought it might be a bit much but it’s not been an issue in my short test time. If I stay in this territory then I’m going to switch up strings and optimize. Unfortunately the V1 cat is a little dark and this project might be better suited for my brighter v2. I’m assuming I could do a string swap pretty easily since they’re both the same scale and use identical hardware.
And I’ve done the string swap to the v2 Acinonyx. Much better result. The string tension does feel more noticeable on it for some reason. Odd since they’re the same measurements. I suspect the action on my v2 is slightly higher than on my v1. Still. BEAD an octave up is interesting. I think a bass vi is in my future if not a baritone.

I haven’t bought much gear in quite awhile and don’t really plan to, but that thing has been a major source of intrigue.
Early days for the Torso, but I does look promising. I still think the Octatrack does things like nothing else, but that Torso thing looks really fast for live improv stuff. Thing about the Octatrack is you can continue to find new and interesting ways of using it over many years. It remains to be seen how deep the Torso’s bag of tricks will be over the long haul.
That Hooky Bass 6 has been on my radar for quite awhile too! I’m currently using a buddy’s bass 6. Can’t remember the model as I’m in Holland at the moment looking after my seriously injured girlfriend. I think I mentioned she was in a bad e-bike accident a few weeks ago. Broken shoulder, kneecap and leg. All on the left side. Very frustrating for her so I’m doing my best to help out with day to day chores.
Dang. That’s brutal and awful. I hope she recovers as quickly as possible.

Very sorry to hear that. I’m sure that’s super frustrating for her and I hope the recovery goes well. and good on you for looking after her. I was just back where I grew up helping out with some things as well.
I got to play a Hooky bass last summer. Sounds just right for that sound. I didn’t like the ergonomics: it was heavier than expected and the balance wasn’t great. If you’re sitting I’m sure none of that matters but standing it might be worth trying one. Of course that’s the kind of thing that might vary a lot from instrument to instrument.
I played a Music Man Silhouette for awhile which was my favourite bass VI. If I “went there” again, I’d do baritone.
As to stringing up underused 4 strings in higher registers: GHS used to make a piccolo bass set that worked off the shelf for EADG an octave up. I had my Ibanez Roadstar II strung that way for about 5 years.
I can also confirm that Stringjoy’s plain steels will cover a 34” scale length if you want to work with custom gauges.
@ugly: if you want to try piccolo/baritone, your G&L that’s too narrow might be just right. Though of course 34” scale sounds way different from shorter scales.
Now I’m wondering how the synth sub sound of an octave pedal would work with my bass that I’m slowly turning into a guitar… which I’m evidently trying to turn back into a bass… or a synth.

I'm enjoying the talk about baritone guitars. I strung my long-gone 32" scale Alembic Spoiler Exploiter with piccolo strings - probably the D'addario set - I was experimenting with cello tuning, so just picked a tuning that seemed like a nice comfortable tension. Fortunately I have a recording from then - the "earth bass" (borrowing Magma's terminology) was my 4001, the "air bass" parts (2 overdubbed) were the Alembic:
I also have two Bass VI-style instruments - my 1996 MIJ Bass VI reissue, and one neck of my Alembic doubleneck originated that way, but was converted to a higher tuning (A-A) but I couldn't handle it so I returned it to Bass VI tuning. And actually, I have a recording of it from soon after I acquired it in 2006 - just the fretless neck first, then the (then) baritone neck comes in (a little before the 2:00 mark, again with two takes overdubbed):
I'm sure none of this helps anyone - just saw the opportunity to butt in and share!
