I’m certain that’s not the only method he used for bass but man is that a cool way to get a sample pitch from “nothing”

I know of theoretical ways to tune that, but not how he actually did it. Nor do I understand what the guy who made the video did to tune it, either. Not familiar with that piece of gear, and pretty certain Dilla didn't have access to such toys.
MPC can time stretch, thus repitch any sample so you can pretty much tune any sample to any pitch.
Dilla used the mpc2000xl and 3000.
The 2000xl changes pitch as you time stretch (up or down)
Don’t know about the 3000.
Then once the sample is “tuned”
Use the 16 levels fonction and voilà, bassline pitches on all 16 pads
in the video he just sampled the feedback and used a tuner on the output of the sp404 mkii
He then tuned the sample to 440 using the pitch adjustment on the sampler.

Hit the Synth & Pedal show in LA today. It was a pretty decent event aside from horrible parking.

They were. There were mostly guitarists plugging in. I saw a few basses. At the Meris booth I was eyeballing a guy with a gorgeous headless short scale Elrick. It turned out to be Steve Lawson. I’m not familiar with his work but when he mentioned he was playing his signature Elrick I knew I was talking to someone who I was going to have to research.
I’m curious about the LVX.
So I got the DLD racked up. It is fantastic. I dunno if it will do what you want @monsterthompson but there are a bunch of things I like about it. It doesn’t try to be “vintage.” What goes in comes out. it has a massive delay buffer and as you shift the delay time it just windows it differently and depending on how you set it up you can record those manipulations into the delay line or not. You can also scrub the delay line, It takes CV very well. Like all 4ms sound generators it lacks attenuators so I paired it with my Five12 QV-L, which is actually a perfect pairing. It can handle an irregular clock. And you get two completely separate delay lines (or not). There are a couple button combos but they are easy to learn and I might label them. The combos also make sense. Bonus: last software revision was over 7 years ago. It’s a mature product.
also picked up a Joranalogue receive 2. Very well built.
that said, I can’t stop reading the Torso S-4 threads. I suspect I’ll wind up with one down the road but right now it’s like a car crash and I can’t look away. I am done with early adopter stuff for awhile.

@JES I appreciate the feedback on that. I’m planning for the release of the Nightverb from Erica, but man those Meris delay and reverb boxes sounded impressive. Of course I was using headphones in a hall of people on a synth I don’t know well, so it wasn’t high fidelity critical listening. One of the guys I talked to said the presets in those pedals are great with a ton of variety, making it unnecessary to do a ton of sound design unless you want to.
yeah. parking was no fun. i saw steve when he was walking downstairs and i was going up. he went back up and we talked for a bit.
ended up talking to curt from red panda, who was very cool.
i was hoping for a few modular manufacturers who were “confirmed,” but not in attendance (maybe they were yesterday).

I did like the Meris boxes. KMA folks were good to talk to. Line 6 had the best salesman on the floor. I managed to tweak the Perkons and Syntryx II.
Now I really want a synth in the form of a 1960s Star Trek console.
i hadn’t planned on going but a friend has an extra ticket, so i ended going as a last-minute thing.
i didn’t really need anything, so didn’t really look too hard.
my main goal was to chat with a few folks to express fandom for their work. red panda was one. i thought five12 and wmd were gonna be there, but they weren’t. i would’ve liked to talk to one of the principals at asm, but didn’t see them when i was there.
meris stuff doesn’t fit my work flow/taste (though i’ve heard good things about the vlx). talked to one of the noise engineering folks, who was super nice, but their aesthetic doesn’t meld with mine.
sorta like namm, the gear part is pretty boring to me these days.

I have no idea what it is - but pretty sure that enter shikari have a custom synth that looks like a cross between a Star Trek console and a fallout walking robot thing
missed this post, but youtube recommended me the video this morning. i liked it best with the simple harp, and i'd REALLY love to hear it with a bass, but not quite enough to buy one...
There was a fire at the building WMD's shop is in within the last couple weeks and WMD's space/stuff got damaged (mostly smoke and water I think), so they're probably busy dealing with that. Craziest part is that it was arson.
There's a clip on IG of it on bass. I didn't bookmark it and now I can't find it again. I expected it to be on B's profile page but I can't seem to locate it. It is a wild sound and not particularly cat like in the lower notes. Definitely had me thinking.
Yeah some random weirdo was caught on camera starting the fire. I think he might even be charged with attempted murder because the upper part of the building is residences.
