Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

How’s everyone doin?
Interesting couple o’ months… sold my Stambugh fretless 5 and have a stingray 5 HH fretless coming from the custom shop. Exciting. I hope it's the last bass I buy but nobody ever means that when they say it.
Anyone heard of an ambient gtr guy named Matt Borghi? Been around for a while, we were chatting a lot about various stuff(he went to the college down the road from me). He lives in Michigan. We ended up collaborating online and have 4 releases coming out over the next few months Three are long forms, each with 2 or 3 1 hour tracks. Each album has its own theme, and the tracks are various mixes of the same theme. They’re kinda drone. The the 4th album will be 10 minute cuts from all of the longforms.
Basically, I sent him a few soundbeds, mostly from the 6 string fretless through the board as well as some Minifreak stuff(I am loving the hell outa that synth), as well as a few shorter things. He then put it together and put his stuff on it and then we went back and forth a bit about the mixes, and here we are.

That sounds awful - smoke and water can do tremendous damage. Hope they can recover.
I worked in an office where a sprinkler pipe broke. The water that poured out of it was black and moldy. The water doesn’t circulate so it just sits in the pipes, and when it comes out it is smelly and disgusting. Our insurance company took that opportunity to inform us that the water from the sprinkler system is generally a bigger source of damage than the fire itself. We had lots of client paperwork around, so we got a lot of direction to file our files in cabinets at the end of every work day. I’m sure what happened here was devastating regardless of how much actually burned.
The hope can be enjoyable even if it’s misplaced.
@lordradish — are your online collabs back and forth, or is it more like you send something and the other person does stuff with it and that’s it?
Real bummer about the WMD fire. I’m sure it’s an extra huge burden on a small company.
Given we'd never worked before together, we took it simple. I provided the soundbeds and he built on them, then we'd just discuss the mixes and make small changes. Our styles mesh together really well, so when he gave me back the results I was quite happy with them. If we do it again, we might approach it differently.
I have generally not gotten along that well with fuzz. I'd be briefly impressed by a demo, grab it, and then hate it on almost everything. (*) I did that with a Red Witch Fuzz God, a Devi Ever Truly Beautiful Disaster, some other pedal I don't remember the name of, and a few plugins. And I don't really like Proco RAT either, I just bought a clone on Ebay because I heard good things about it and was curious and I've never used it in a recording.
But I tried this thing out because I generally like Audiority and thought maybe they'd surprise me. They did. Paired up with Ruina and some other stuff and I'm getting some really doomy Sunn O))) vibes even from sine waves, and my quick plugin testing setup (plus a previously recorded drone loop) is already the basis for the next track I'll record as soon as the workday is officially done.

(*) (admittedly I never tried fuzz with bass, it was always on synth parts.)

There is a lot of variation between the different versions and mods of the Rat. If you ever feel like giving Rats a try again, I'd highly recommend the JHS Packrat because you get a ton of versions in one pedal.
That said, I've never used a Rat on any type of synth...only on bass.
I also like the Does it Doom Aghartha, but that's not purely a Rat: Aghartha - Does It Doom?
Not that you asked, but I guess I felt the need to make a case for the Rat.
The one I had was Little Bear R.ATTACK. Three different modes and I didn't really like any of them for synth stuff.
iirc, one of the big deals about the og rat was its filter control (may have the wrong name); didn’t look like that doom thingie had that.
what is the desired sound? i know it was a flavor of the month on tb many years ago, but i am partial to the dr scientist the elements; their frazz dazzler is also cool. i like those due to their ability to use exp pedal to control the clean/dirt blend as well as their flexible eq.
btw, @Starthief, as seen (but i didn’t play) at the l.a. pedal/synth show, noise engineering has a new fuzz *pedal* that might interest you. i talked to one of the ne folks. i think she said it was based in one of their analog ruina modules—*not* the versio. (not on their website at this moment.)

Glad we are onto distortion again. I’ve been using an Idiot Box Blow Box for for heavy distortion for several years. Sounds great on bass. But I’m finding it kind of weirdly nasal on touch guitar. It must be something about the attack of a string hitting a fret. I tried reversing roles and using the Xotic BB as heavy distortion and it doesn’t have that problem but also doesn’t cut or roar like the Blower Box. (The other pedal on my board is a VFE Woodchipper which is just savage).
In other news, I am in love with the 4ms DLD. Seriously underrated module. I am suddenly up for a Eurorack live sampling rig, I guess.

Damnation Audio MBD2 and never looked back.
I havent even wanted to try anything else for dirt on bass since this one hit my board.

yeah, if I were a “normal” bass player, my distortion needs would have been met by the damnation audio MBD years ago. (I have the MBD-1 But ostensibly they are the same effect.)
On the other hand, I am not normal, which is why I also have three or four other fuzzes in my pedal pile. But none of them do what the MBD does.
Incidentally, regarding the “how has everyone been?” thing
I almost feel disingenuous hanging out in this group these days because for the last three or four months, I’ve been playing meat and potatoes bass in a neo-soul/funk band, with no effects, no ambience, no weirdness whatsoever. It’s kind of fun to see how the other half lives

I’ve been pretty happy with the MBD3. I have a few basses with hotter output and I do run my Hilbish Compressimiser ahead of it occasionally. I never had any issues I’d complain about. I think it’s an option worth considering.
