I was going for Glenn Campbell meets matchbox 20, but... :)


part of my modular addiction is trying to make things go 'wrong' in a way that makes me happy. Modulation, cross patching and whatnot. My preamp module has been geeking out a bit, but I want to get back to incorporating live bass into the mix ASAP. It's been good to just try to learn synthesis. I really thought I understood the basics, but it goes pretty deep with this modular crap :)

Make things go wrong.....YES please!!! I love it when machines do random unexpected things. Like "badly chopped" crusty samples....pure cooooolness.

I listen to a fair amount of stuff that at least incorporates post-rock sort of elements, but being new to the bass I'm at a loss for how to approach it from a bass playing perspective. So much of it seems guitar-driven. What is the bass player's role generally in this sort of music? I hear these huge walls of sound when the music is peaking and it can be tough for me to make out where the bass player fits in.

I keep hitting the "Like" button but so far, nothing happens: I wake up the next day and it's still just showing up on my Facebook feed, not appearing underneath the xmas tree! I must be doing something wrong.

I suppose it fits in however you want it to! Bass is a guitar in a sense, just goes lower. But lots of harmonic content and possibility similar to guitar. I've tried doing big, washy stuff with both guitar and bass and prefer bass. Partly because of the bigger low end and partly because I'm better on bass than guitar :)

i am surely not an expert on this stuff.

but it seems to me that the interesting thing would be to create your own paradigm.

what do *you* want to hear?

This may sound extreme, ever thought about picking up a cheap 6 string bass? I don't do the post-rock thing, more of an ambient soundscape guy, but I kept going back between gtr and bass, even though I could get more sonically out of the guitar, I'm a much better bassist, so I said hell with it, bought a Hohner Bass VI for 200 bucks, learned how to play it, and then dropped 3.2 k on a Cliff Bordwell 6. Just an idea...

Based on the direction of this thread, to buy modular synths :)

I'm no expert in the genre, but maybe start with downbeat notes and blend in rhythmic multi tap delay echoes. I think the goal is to stay simple with the fingering and let the effects do the work.

You don't need another old fart with too many pedals opining about how to find your own voice in music, but what the hell, I'm on vacation and drinking beers so here's my take:

First off, I haven't a fecking clue what "post-rock" means, so maybe I'm way off base. Be that as it may...
It may seem guitar driven but perhaps those are all basses? Or, even if you know they're not...why couldn't they be? If that's the sound you want to make and the music you want to be involved in, figure out how to be a part of that sound. Figure out how to be all of that sound! Do what it takes to not just "fit in" but to define that sound.

isn't godspeed you black emperor co-led by a bassist? (they're post-rock, right?)

also, even they're probably not really post-rock, but i think they travel in a similar vein, supersilent doesn't have guitar or bass, just two keyboardists, a trumpet player and a drummer (though the drummer left and now the trumpet player also plays drums). for bass content, they're done some gigs with john paul jones.

seems to me there's a lot of latitude to create what you want.

Exactly like that ...no....but if I want to eff up and get weird with an electric bass as the main source my first go to is EASILY my Red Panda Particle and Ditto Looper (I really like the "stutter glitch" trick with that looper)
