I've had my eyes on one particular unfinished bass at my friend's shop for a while now. Don't remember offhand if it already has frets installed, but lap steel is one application where marker lines on the top would definitely be my preference. Dang, just what I need, another rabbit hole!

I use a 1/4" 6 inch long ratchet extension with my ebow on the 6 string, gives me ton of glissy goodness.
I also find that pressing on the fret a bit harder can sometimes give it that start it needs. I often fade in the notes, so I can hit it pretty hard.
Yeah, and the ratchet extension goes between the socket and ratchet!
Everything I learned about gliss I learned from watching Daevid Allen from Gong. And if you don't know who Gong is, hoooo boy.

My favorite Morton Feldman story: ~25 years ago I'm driving home from a rehearsal. The house we rehearsed in was 5 minutes away from where I lived. But I switched on the radio, the local NPR station, and I hear these gorgeously lush, glacially slow moving, soft plangent bowed long tones...If each chord change [sic] was a whole note, the tempo must've been measured in beats-per-hour. I think there might have been a total of six or seven pitch changes in the time it took me to drive home.
So of course I'm captivated. So I park out in front of my apartment and stay in the car with the engine running, listening to this lovely music. I figure I'll hang out until the piece ends so I can find out who the composer is.
I was out there for almost two hours!!!!
Turned out to be Morton Feldman's String Quartet II.

a friend was playing another piece by feldman and told me how they're constructed. wow.
basically (as i recall) shifting bar lines that line up occasionally. but it's all in time.
