Just so you know, Reaper has a TON of great tutorial videos covering everything.

I'm pretty bad with the DAW stuff as well, Its a totally foreign thing to me in terms of work flow and I still haven't gotten a great workflow figured out with that stuff yet. Video tutorials work great for some folks and some of us not so much. My goldfish-esq attention span doesn't help with this at all, lol.

Not as much as learning a DAW, I can get around pretty ok on Ableton.
It's learning a new one that sux @$$. All the shortcuts and intuitive things are completely changed.

Now that my post-NAMM obligations are mostly met, I'm diving into a new rabbit hole: more slides to complement the two I already had. Third from left is the first one, which a friend built for me in 1979 or so for my old Travis Bean fretless. It's freemachining brass, which the unfinished one on the far left is as well. The chromed steel one has been onboard for a year or two and is a generic commercial piece. Second one from left is this week's folly, silicon aluminum bronze. I'm going to try a few different finish textures on the top surfaces for right hand "bowing", and so far preliminary results are very promising. Once I learn whatever that leads to I'll apply it to the new soft brass one as well. Then on to some new electronic noise toys, which I'm really looking forward to building.

Cool! I have a wide variety of materials in mind to try eventually, and I'll add that to my list. Seems like a potentially great application for acrylic infusion. I have access to a nice CNC cutter/router now too.

The 642 bronze bar stock was not all that easy to work with and my hands are pretty seriously hashed up right now. But it feels like the payoff is going to be worth it. My luthier friend didn't take me too seriously about optimizing my last bass build for slide at first, so I'd love to see what he could come up with now that he understands what I'm shooting for a little better.

Do you sometimes combine slides with an Ebow??

There are vids of that out there actually. And that's not far off the way I've been using slide at my weekly bluegrass/Americana Friday night jams. There's often another bass player there, so it's a way for me to keep playing, and I see learning traditional melody lines as always being a useful thing.

One thing I noticed trying an Ebow is that a bass string is much harder "to start" than a small guitar string. That or maybe I suck.....probably both.....

Maybe you could tweak one for bass.

I think something like the Gizmotron has a lot of potential too.

i made one about 25-30 years ago. it's in pieces right now. should probably put it back together.
