Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

I was planning on checking into this thread and saying Hi. So Hello.
I stumbled onto this thread a couple weeks ago then stumbled onto a used delay pedal and my music world has changed completely and forever. I got into the Stoner/Doom genre a while ago but really loved the spacey/psychedelic instrumental side of the genre best. I plugged this pedal in thought "Here is that sound I have been wanting to do all along" It was an EQD Space Spiral. I absolutely loved it. But then I saw a Strymon DIG in the used gear rack and ended up bringing the EQD Space Spiral back and buying the DIG for only 67 dollars more. 280$ Canadian after tax. I have not gotten around to a NPD yet because I wanted to wait and experiment a bit first. I gave a mediocre review to my last pedal and regret it because now that I love it I can't edit the original post....
Truth be told I preferred the tone of the EQD pedal more until this morning when I had an idea listening to an album with lots of delay. If I turn the DIG on "Kill Dry" mode and use my LS-2 for my dry signal. I could then plug my Boss BF-2 after the DIG and make my own pseudo EQD Space Spiral. It really hurt bringing that pedal back because it was really really good and it sounded awesome. But the DIG can do just so much more. And now that I added the BF-2 to just my delay signal, just like the Space Spiral, I am so very happy with my sound.
I have so many questions I would like to ask but since most are probably answered in this thread I will try reading through at least some of it first. I have so much to learn. This is such a different style of playing than the Prog rock, Classic rock and Metal I am used to playing. Well, my love of Prog and psychedelic rock has me familiar with the sounds but playing them is new.

The Feedback Friday thread can help too... for what it's worth my ambient side is in the "breaks / bridges / intros" of my metal band so still meld things... but some of my noise stuff just doesn't fit my band and so it's just me doing stuff alone... my actual band board isn't much but flanger plus chorus plus dirt and my dirty robot can do a bit of fun

Thanks. Never have I and never will I consider myself "normal" so I think I may fit in around here. Been mostly a lurker on TB since I joined but I feel like I had been just messing around and learning until now. This is what I have always wanted to do but I didn't know it yet. I just want to go play but I live in an apartment and it is early here. Plus i have a week or two of chores that have piled up since I discovered the beauty and joy that resides in these delay pedals.
Key is have fun creating. Peoplenhere are awesome and very helpful. Not judging here.

Yeah I have seen that casually looking in on this thread the last couple of weeks. And for me I spend the last two weeks doing pretty much what you just said. Having tons of fun just exploring and discovering this new world of sounds literally under my fingertips Then after that the wonder of actually applying these new sounds and making them work playing music I know and love has been so fun.
One of the best discoveries has been with my distortion. I had it in channel A with my delay in Channel B. Channel B at noon and Channel A at around 9 o clock. And the distortion sounded almost fuzz like. And then turned the delay off out of curiosity and possibly the best my distortion has ever sounded. I usually play it clean blend at 9 o clock and distortion at noon. Flipping it was amazing.

Wise words. One of the most unnerving things about this is the conversations I'm hearing from people who aren't taking this seriously, at all.
I teach, remotely at two colleges, and I'm on a tech committee. We started a task force to get all of our classes online in the next week, so I'm going to actually be working my ass off. And being an experienced online instructor, I think (not to say there's anything good about this outbreak), my job prospects for more work are actually going to increase. My wife works for the state at the Agency of Human Services, another job that's going to be very needed in the coming months. None of that really matters, of course, if money is useless, but I don't think we're there yet.
Before all this happened, I had a Korg Wavestate on order from Sweetwater, that's still supposed to be here in April. I don't plan on cancelling it, but as to getting more gear, probably not, but I don't really need any new gear. Another pedal might be nice, but not on my big list of priorities, right now.
I think we very well may come out of this a transformed and better society, because this is laying our societal inequalities out in the open that they normally aren't, and even the densest, most obtuse people are going to see it.
Welcome aboard. I used to have a DIG, that was a nice pedal.
I came from the prog/fusion/funk world and this is certainly a 180. I tend to go for minimal, classic space ambient, and it's all about what you don't play, half the time. To sit there and just let a drone play for 5 minutes, can be more challenging that learning some prog riff.
Tell me about it. I'm a professor at a public university. While every private university is already working on how to implement online courses starting next week, our institution is organizing talks and conferences about the virus, gathering people unnecessarily. A positive case has already been detected in our city so we have to act now, not when the virus has already spread.
For what it's worth, some of the stoner rock I listen to has a pretty strong ambient element to it, Electric Moon comes to mind. Lots of effects in all that fuzzy haze.
Ours is public, but we've been pretty proactive about it, thankfully. Plus, Vermont only has two cases, right now, so we have a lot more wiggle room than a lot of other places do.
Yeah. That song seems like a perfect example of the stuff I like myself in the genre. I am aware of and really like that band.
I have a couple of youtube channels I watch that post new albums every day so I listen to something every day while I stretch. Chill and relaxing but still rocking and cool. Problem is with that method few band names stick in my head. I may absolutely love an album and forget the name by lunchtime... I find it hard to explain to people just how wide ranging the genre is and to point out this is the "subgenre" or type or Stoner/Doom I love best. For some reason My Sleeping Karma is one of the few that stick in my head. Maybe because I think it is one of the best names ever. Oddly enough Electric Moon is one of the few others. I think I recognized the name of the band I listened to this morning. Age of Indica, the album was Through the Eyes of Three. Great stuff.
For you classic ambient folks out there, this 4-disc album is now name-your-price. Steve Roach is probably one of the biggest influences on where I'm at, right now...
To add to this, what I find so amazing about Roach is how he's able to really convey spatial dimensions in his music. Some of the sounds he makes sound so far away in the distance, but in a very real way.
I can safely say, I probably listen to more of his work than any other artist, right now. It's really diverse, too.
