Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

but you can't sample directly into it without a class compliant audio interface

Here's our expensive sample-based device. You figure out how to get the samples in it, but you need another expensive device.

Been thinking about flipping my Novation Circuit for an Elektron Digitakt. I rarely use the Novation, and mostly keep it for the ability to use it as a multi channel midi controller, which can provide backing sounds. Seems like the Digitakt is better suited, and i can probably manage the upgrade cost.

i had looked at this a while back, probably before the newest firmware.

i'm basically with you guys on the sampling issue. seems goofy. unclear why they'd do that. is it an ADC issue?

the sampling and the price def leave me out.

as an aside, i know some of you guys don't like his reviews. i think he does a great job of running the features down. very logical, obviously knows his stuff. hits pros and cons well.

Just as a side note with all these machines and gear. (Was wanting to post since I even developed new techniques impossible with just finger style.)
The one thing that most improved/changed and opened new ideas was me starting to use a pick for the first time in 25 years. 1mm nylon ftw

2 years in now almost, I'm maybe at the "not suck that bad" stage of progress.

Next....8484848e83 pedals

MAJOR FAIL!!

I thought so! You can load samples off your computer via USB, but to play something in live, you'd need an interface of some sort. it's also got a very convoluted menu system, but there's nothing in hardware as advanced for granular stuff.

Man, the Digitakt is a seriously fun machine. For live sampling the Octatrack suits me better, but I got a ton of songs finished on the Digitakt. Aside from the 8 audio tracks it can sequence 8 midi tracks.

Ha! I started with a pick. Took me forever to get decent with my fingers (ehem)

I should just point out that if it seems we need to all stay home, it certainly seems as though we have plenty of toys to keep us busy.

But seriously, how's everyone doing with this?

Oh man. I am in the 2nd spot in NY to have had a teacher w it...so we've been shut down since Monday. I am actually thankful for that because the lack of inaction this week has been alarming to say the least. Next week life is gonna get interesting and 2020 is going to be a difficult year across the board. We are pretty stir crazy at this point, but I somehow got ahead of the curve and panic shopped last week. Our town (Plainview, NY - suburb on Long Island) has been slowly catching on each day and realizing this ain't the flu. My biggest concern is that at the start of this my ~9 yr old daughter had a mystery fever that lasted 3 days. Negative test for flu or strep...corona tests were a big shrug and not even brought up when she was at the Dr on Tues, tests just aren't avail. fever gone but dry cough is here...runny nose and sneezing make us feel she might not have it...guess we will know in a few days of the rest of us get sick since we've been in lock down. But it's kinda like trying to fight the wind...you just can't. The big problem is that everyone running around now shopping and in places where it hasn't shown are probably passing it around. Hopefully we all just go on lockdown by Monday and the sick who will need treatment can hopefully get it and we can slow the spread. We've already received communications from the school, about remote learning for the rest of the year and the possibility of the school year going into summer.

Ok enough on that....

In other news, I was super lucky the other day and snagged a Drolo Molecular Disruptor!!! Trying to stop reading about this non sense and watch demos of patches to pick what gets loaded on the pedal.

Everyone stay safe and smart out there.

I may have missed this, do you have a sequencer running everything? Asking, because the Digitakt has some limitations, if that's the case.

I don't. But I've used it as a midi controller for desktops like the Nyx. I was thinking that with the midi it has, I might be able to midi control some of my pedal parameters.
Yes... I was asking more so because with the way it handles timing, it can be a real pain in the ass if you don't send the CC message BEFORE the next sequence starts.

I suck at drum programming but I do have a lot of fun with it, it's got quite the curve, but it also is a lot more than a drum machine.

I dug out an old track, hope it's ok to share it here - it was originally a bass/drum duo spontaneously composed in the studio. Afterwards I took it and added a drone that I made with a Moog Rogue that I no longer own, split into two channels, each channel going through a low-pass filter (MF-101 & Frostwave Resonator), both controlled by the LFO from the MF-103 phaser. The drone is pretty mellow at the beginning but I start messing with it as the track progresses.

I guess I should say the bass is a Jaguar Bottom Master - I'm using the built-in fuzz! I wrote a blog post about the instrument here: Fender Jaguar Bottom Master

The only picks I like are the Dunlop 2.0mm stubby's... and at first that's all I could use however now all I can use is fingers hah! though there are a few songs that I can't play in time unless I use a pick, mainly tool and jason Newstead Metallica load and reload stuff.

On the civic-19 thing, have a bit of a cough and so does the family so going to get tested just in case... problem over here is quite a few people are now getting it that weren't the "at risk" type so I think the reported numbers not tested is going to be exponentially higher than the official numbers... I mean how many of the sick caught public transport, went to work, went to shops etc... anyways

found an awesome review of the boss sy1 which I how I would use it... with distortion and just make crazy sounds...
arg so need to find funds for this now

I'd be more inclined to use the SY1 in recording situation than live. For stacking multiple layers, textures etc....
Maybe taking a crap load of samples of the SY1 in my SP and just experiment, that would be a blast.
Recalling many presets on the go would be a major pain in the @$$ for me personally since I tend to machine gun sets and hate long breaks in any kinds of music from small classical chamber music to full on Punk. (Huge pet peeve, major jazz bands with INSANE GOOD players taking about 1-2 mins to change the sheet music that 5 pages taped together on three music stands...... :spit:......2 mins X 10 songs......20 mins of dead time in 1h......ZZzzzzzz)

Best band I ever saw totally machine gun a set non à stop for 1h20 plus encore....TOWER OF POWER....HOLY $%^&*&^!!!!!!! Truly something amazing. They spoke maybe once.....then booooom......Oakland grease in da house!!!!
I've transcribed entire TOP records and Rocco is not human. He can do those long sets like a walk in the park. My right hand cramped up just looking at him play those 16th notes.

One of my other all time favs the Ramones did that but they stopped playing in 1996 before I got to see them live. (I'm still sad about that 24 years later)

i know what you mean, my band never really did banter or much and like to be professional in showing up on time and starting and finishing on time when we did play lots... realistically now I'd use it live for probably two or three settings (with expression pedal) and just mess a lot at home. But given I usually more mess at home and don't get the midi keyboard attached to my laptop much this would be more fun for instant synth on my board.
I did like the end part too of instant skrillex style bass using expression pedal To change rate With sequencer and playing octaves

and given all my other pedals I pretty much always "set and forget" even one good sound kicks my dirty robot off the board!

Edit: covid19 update up here.

Government taking major action to prevent what is happening in Usa and Europe.
Everything is getting closed.
Not a fan of the people in power here, but I must commend the decisions made by them on this. Prevent instead of trying to contain the outbreak once its gone $hit storm.
