Embarassingly enough, my first cassette was Love Gun, by Kiss, when it came out. I had real crap taste in music when I was a kid.. Joan Jett, Billy Joel, other pedestrian nonsense.
In high school, I couldn't stand the hair band crap, so I mostly listened to 60's music and the Dead.
If I had to look at my roots as the musician I now am, it would be:
Beatles - Abbey Road
Yes - The Yes Album/Close to the Edge
Coltrane - A Love Supreme
Eno- Music for Films
Ashra - Blackouts
The Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery
and probably some Waters-era Floyd album, as well as the original Rocky soundtrack (those basslines, OMFG)
Pretty interesting list, and somewhat strange, as well as punk/metal-free, which is surprising to me nowadays, because I don't listen to anything remotely conventional.
