Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

Cool patches!

Thanks.
I was trying to pencil out a few things with Zoia LFO and Random and Clock Divider modules to approximate a Krell patch. The second one used a sequencer with a few modulated pitch values. It’s tricky business.

The 0 Coast audio is coming back into the Zoia for effects processing.

I’m not thrilled with these, but I’m learning.

it’s just really cool and there’s nothing like it
I agree. It seems like an awesome tool for creating.

Anyone wanna buy a kidney??

;)

Makes me feel guilty for not practicing on my SP as much as I want the past few months. Since the planet went FUBAR I've been with the kids 24/7. By the time they go to bed my brain is mush. I can play bass no problem keeping the muscles oiled up but I dont have the concentration for the SP........
(By no means complaining , I'm extremely lucky to have my family. And would not change a thing........but I'd sneak out in a ninja suit for a few hours.....:ninja:)

You'd think with all the enforced "free" time I have that I'd have recorded giant volumes worth of stuff by now, but it's weird how hard it is to get motivated. Right now where I live it's hot, humid, grey, and kind of rainy, so I'm gonna stay indoors. Maybe today I'll actually do something. I've turned a corner with my pedal collection; with the recent addition of the Boss SY-1 synth and the Dwarfcraft Grazer granular the number of sounds I can create has expanded pretty dramatically. Just a matter of putting some order to the chaos and creating something out of it. Need to pick a few sounds, a few pieces of gear, and ignore the rest. Avoid the paradox of choice.

people are feeling a real pressure to be productive, and it’s understandable. but what we’re going through is genuinely traumatic in some ways, and that isn’t being addressed very well. try to go easy on yourself.

You can put in some work and make some « practice beats » as I call them. (Beats, of drones, or noise, or insert any creation of your choice)

I make those simply to try things and then throw away. Then make a blank slate, start over. Rinse repeat.
(Imagine what my bad stuff sounds like..... :roflmao:)

Stay strong, stay safe. Keep it up buddy.

Hard times for everyone

I'm very often beating myself up about not being productive enough, and I find it helpful to look back over my entire history as a musician and look for patterns. And one of the patterns I've recognized -- and that I have to continually remind myself of -- is that those time periods in my life that I may fondly recall as My Most Productive just happened to coincide with the time periods when I had absolutely zero responsibilities ...and absolutely zero income.

!!!

So yeah, all things being equal, I'm pretty cool being less productive nowadays. :)

I am FINALLY starting to get inspired, lately, I've been doing a lot of woodshedding. Sat down with the Music Man and the Wal two nights in a row with NO PEDALBOARD and actually worked on technique.

I'd love it if this went into a meta discussion territory, but regardless, one of the things I really struggle with is this overbearing "need to create" that dominates my thinking, almost everytime I set foot in the studio. The DAW almost always gets fired up, and I pressure myself to start new ideas, or finish things... and that keeps me from doing much. I find, increasingly, when I just go up to the studio with no preconceptions, and don't even fire up the DAW, often, I have a blast and cover a lot of ground. Last night, I also fired up some beats on the Digitakt, and just practiced some basslines on the Moog. Night before, I worked on my slap/muting technique, which, generally, sucks ass. I need to really recalibrate my thinking, entirely, as I am my own worst enemy.

I tend to avoid the computer all together when shedding bass. Much more of a distraction than anything else.

(Except when transcribing songs I need to slow down)

You think your slapping sux......man ....challenge accepted!!!!!

My 2 cents.

Yeah, when shedding bass, I never fire up the DAW. That's just practice. I just need to do it more, especially not playing in bands, right now.

I think the DAW gets fired up (then becomes a presence, for better or for worse) because I always have that fear that I'll come up with something amazing, and not recorded.

Exactly why this has been my by best friend for the past 2 years or so. I can't imagine working without it now. It's so versatile and I use it in so many different ways.
Turn it on....boom....ready to go in 3 secs flat. Battery life is very good so no need for extra power cords.

From the Way-Wayback Machine, a 4 track cassette recording mostly recorded with Radio Shack plate mics. The violin was dubbed later but most of the rest is live guitar synth and drums with some post-processing. Lo-fi, yeah...

Damn I love that gritty drum tone!!!
When I sample live drums I use only L-R as I where lifting it from an old dusty record.

Reminds me that maybe I should get my 4 track tape recorder fixed.......
