Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

Hoo boy, yeah, especially now. All my professional musician friends are struggling (okay, almost all of them).

I take it back. I would totally sell mics for food.
One of the reasons I quit that gig years ago.
The stability sucked b@llz.
No gigs for 1 month and you are in deep ishhh.

Got a family now....so I got priorities. Still have music as my "second" job.

HOLY MOLY! I had amassed almost $1200 from selling off beer glasses (crazy, right?!) and a Hydrasynth popped up on ebay yesterday for $1200...which was a great price, but still a few hundred too high w shipping and taxes, I decided to take a stab at an offer of $1k w a note saying if you can let it go for 1k, I can send cash right now.

BOOM - GOT A HYDRASYNTH COMING TO ME LATER THIS WEEK!!!!

...and my budget is down to $0 again. Got a few more glasses I wanted to sell to raise funds for a cioks 8...I'm PUMPED!!! Totally made my day!!!!

congrats. i hope you (think you will) like it.

when you get it, make sure it has the most recent firmware.

https://www.ashunsoundmachines.com/downloads

it’s pretty simple, but you do need to follow instructions and make sure you do the keys version (i assume you got the keys version).

also, if you’re on facebook, there’s a good hydrasynth group that has people
who were involved in its development, so it’s an excellent resource.

pm me if you have any questions.

not bad for selling beer glasses.

Damn....really dope.
Can I put some drums on that for fun.

;)

Zoia is out of my price range for now. (1000$ cad to my door is too much for me....)
But damn....now.I have serious polymoon envy.....anyone see that thing used not selling 8$ less than new?!?!?!?
Might take you up on that offer.

Yeah, I absolutely love my Polymoon, at times I almost think of it as something other than a delay pedal. It was based, essentially, on the early 80's 'stacked delays' that Zappa used to use. Then again, I'm a Meris fanboy, having 3 of their pedals. Have you seen the Ottobit Jr, their bitcrusher? Not a bitcrusher guy, myself, but if I was, I'd have one.

Yeah....that otto bit and polymoon sound incredible.

Does the polymoon lend itself easily to "on the spot" knob tweaking for sound manipulation???

Meris have very top shelf stuff. Very innovative and very musical.

Okay, you sound design gurus... any idea what goes into making the bass sound on this? It's the only fretless-like one I've ever heard that actually gets it right. Punchy, with the right attack, etc. Any tips for going this direction? I don't think I could do it on the Moog, it sounds too perfect. Throw a little portamento on this, and I'd be a happy camper...

Do you have the Mercury 7? Curious about that one.

i prefer its mini-looper side because it fits my needs more than the sounds on the other modes. i get pretty tired of pitched delays, etc. they don’t do much for what i like to do.

Interesting... so far I've been just the opposite: Gravitating towards the Count To 5's pitched delay mode whicle not quite figuring out what to do with its looping modes. Which seems weird coming from a guy who's been immersed in live looping delays for as long as I have... But so far everything I come up with in Mode 2 just makes me think "Man, that would be cool if only the delay time were 4x or 8x longer!" I know it's a "granular delay" but perhaps it's a bit too granular for my aesthetic? Mode 3 I have a slightly better handle on how I want to use it, I just need to spend more time codifying how to actually make that happen with the Ct5.

The only piece of kit that I have that will not age well is my computer and audio interface for obvious reasons.

Oh man, don't get me started: My DAW is a Macintosh G4 MDD under OS10.3.9/Panther -- I believe Apple is up to OS 10.15.x by now? -- running MOTU's Digital Performer v4.5 -- and DP is up to v10 by now I think. So basically my rig is state-of-the-art...if this was 15 years ago.

we are a strict "sell no microphone" household here.

I was too for 30-something years. About a year or two ago I sold off a half dozen 12 Gauge condensor mics only because the guy begged me to sell them to him and offered me more than I paid for them new, and that experience opened my eyes to what a hoarder/pack rat I was when it came to microphones. I still own maybe 20 mics, and if I realistically try to recall when the last time I used any of them...even pre-COVID...let's see, I did a tracking session in September 2019 that used half the collection, and then before that...um... heh-heh, I don't think I saved my 2017 calendar, so... I just recently loaned a pair of AKG C451Es to a friend and I told him "DO NOT RETURN THESE TO ME UNTIL I ASK FOR THEM!" And I wouldn't be surprised if I never ask. So maybe I should re-think my Sell No Microphone policy? They are literally gathering dust!

my thing about the ct5 looper is using it in the transcendence (i think it is) mode, so i can do the stuttery loop thing or go the the 3-head operation.

i put it before a mangling block (charlie foxtrot, scrutator, sneak attack et al.) and before my volume pedal and the chain after it (including the main looper, which is the boomerang3). this allows me to play little snippets that are not audible (before the vol pedal, remember?) and then bring them in and mess around with them; using the back-and-forth between 1- and 3-head operation can set up interesting patterns/mini-grooves/little bursts of mayhem. i can loop that later on (and sometimes i'll resample that loop with another looper.)

Yes, lots of on the spot. No menu diving, there's the knobs, and each knob has an alternate function that you get by pressing one of the switches. I labeled all of my Meris pedals so I have the secondary functions on them.

I certainly do. It's the last thing on my chain, after the H9. It just has plate and cathedral. I use the plate for conventional stuff, and then tweak the hell out of it and the cathedral. The stereo on this sounds soooooooooo good and big. Has pitch variations, swells, hi and lo pass. I got this because I wanted the filtering options, because bass can sound like crap in verb if you don't filter the lows out.
