Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

Hey folks--just a heads up that I started a thread to chronicle my reverb search because I like to write...and write. So the story will be over there, but I've really enjoyed following this thread more closely and will continue to hang out and maybe post a recording someday. In the meantime, here's some droney granular synth stuff I did a few years back.

I never got into Zappa myself.

Me neither. Didn't gel with my relationship to masculinity or something. Obviously brilliant and talented, and I appreciate that he had a sense of humour.

his sense of "humor" is one reason i got tired of him.

I tried Zappa. I acknowledge his musical talent. I just don't connect with his music. A friend of mine booked Zappa for a gig back in the day, hung out with him briefly. Said Zappa's band was super tight, and Zappa was tough on them at rehearsal.

Jumping in on the Zappa theme. I haven’t found anything he’s done that connects with me. I get that he’s respected, but I don’t understand and/or enjoy what I’ve heard.

I think we have a consensus here.

I got major respect for Zappa. But I never clicked with his stuff.

Must have listened or given a chance to over 20 of his recordings.
Maybe Waka Jawaka was my "favorite" one.

Saw Zappa plays Zappa about 8 years ago.
Good show but the tunes....still not my shizzle.

His musicians though....holy %%$*#^##.
Major monsters/aliens in there.

I like Zappa interviews and enjoyed his perspectives in general, but just don’t connect with the music. Musically all head, no heart and lyrically, the silly hippie humor wears thin fast

I can’t see the word “hippie” without hearing that verse from GWAR’s Slaughterama in my head. Some parts of my brain are frozen at age 15.

More trying to make sense of the EssenceFM

Having done some digging and tutorial watching, I have learned a ton about programming the Volca FM. I still don't know how to really construct a sound other than random tweaking; there are so many parameters it's hard to imagine how to get a particular sound the way you guys say Brian Eno knows how to, but at least I know how to operate the machine, no thanks to Korg's lack of adequate documentation. Months after buying it I am finally excited to really dig in and play with it.
