Decided to try sequencing my EssenceFM straight from Logic. After about an hour I just think Logic isn’t the best midi sequencer. Way more fun from the Octatrack. Now I’m watching tutorials on ReNoise but have been a bit nervous about diving into such a deep well

I love my Octatrack, so it’s not that...just looking to go deeper. I prefer the Octatrack sequencing itself, but the midi, though really good, has some limitations

I like a lot of heavy music but stuff like Jinjer and periphery just doesn’t gel with me... I equate it to meshuggah / o can appreciate it but can’t stand a full album worth

Okay, been programming my Volca FM. Just two operators out of six so far, and already I am impressed with how rich and varied the sound this thing can make. I'm getting the hang of it; the envelope generator settings are pretty straightforward, and the level scale isn't so hard once you understand that it represent the difference between how notes will be handled from the left end of the keyboard to the right. A few other parameters are not yet clear to me but I'm getting there. The algorithm just determines which operators carry (ie generate) sounds and which operators modulate the carriers. A few more programming sessions and I should have a pretty cool patch to show for it. I feel like I've really made a breakthrough. These FM synths are really badass machines.

for folks who like small women doing both pretty and cookie monster-ish vocals, i present rolo tomassi:

I was a big fan of Carcass, so I found myself listening to Arch Enemy at one point. I think they've rotated through a few female vocalists, but all have been fairly comparable and quite good. I'd put them in a similar sonic class/style.

I do like the heavy and brutal stuff. I think at some point if a riff gets frantic enough it becomes a blur, not unlike an ambient wash. My ears eventually drift from complicated beats and let them become background sounds and pulses.

i like them because of the little electronics tracks they have going along with the rhythm players.

I just spent a few hours in hell with ReNoise. Their website has these 4 “getting started” tutorial videos, so I opened up ReNoise and worked along side the tutorials. It wasn’t quite as painful as I thought it would be, but it’s very different and I’m struggling to come to grips with it. Couple weeks of wall punching should do it

there’s some really cool aspects to it. The automation is great, it comes with a ton of really good samples and instruments and tons of em. Maybe I’ll run out of patience with the learning curve, but I do see the appeal

Don't forget you need to program the "note off" steps on soft synths and external midi sequences unless you want endless sustains.

That instrument selector in the top right is weird since it isn't always connected to one dedicated track.

The automation widgets are nice. Pretty easy to add an LFO to a device.

Any of you guys use your volume pedals a lot? I play about 10-12 hours live a week and use the volume pedal like crazy for ambience, effects and rhythmic patterns. I’ve gone through so many Ernie ball strings on the EB VP that I’ve los count but keep coming back to it because I love the feel. Thinking of getting the shoble modded one but it’s $300 and am not sure if I want to spend that on a volume pedal. Anyone on the same struggle?

Ha! Not this time! They have a habit of putting two of their pedals in a giant box and calling it a limited edition. I'm super not into that.

Also, Animals As Leaders are great. Great musicianship and the music is super cool. Tosin's a bad dude.
