CHI had Fred Hopkins.
I’m flipping out right now......on the 2nd straight Air album.....going on the 3rd.
This is gonna be spinning for quite a while.

Looks like you're binging on Air records today. That's right where I would have suggested beginning.
The record that began it all for me was Where's Your Cup? It also was the record that turned me on to Stomu, Myra Melford and Brandon Ross. Brilliant album.
Any of his Very Very Circus group records.
Any of his Zooid group records. This music that he's written in the past 10 years with this band is like none other. It's very particular and in a class of it's own.
A GREAT record from 2015 that he's on is Made In Chicago, with Jack Dejohnette, Muhal Richard Abrahms, Larry Gray and Roscoe Mitchell. So great.

a lot of that is due to his pitch organization. he’s got a whole system based on intervals (not keys) and how they interact with each other and branch out. i went to a talk he gave at ucla. a lot of us tried to make heads or tails out of it after the fact. very intense stuff. anyway, his players all have to know how this stuff works (so hats off to stomu for that).
threadgill was also a very generous and cool guy.
Care to elaborate on this « intervals » organization?

Like Steve Coleman, I listened to one of his master classes online, he lost me after a few secs.......
My brain said: « nope....I’m out!! See y’a. »
That's the shizznit. A lot of my stuff, unfortunately, doesn't necessarily work with hip-hop grooves, if it did, I'd be golden.
I really like Threadgill's solo stuff, too, gets really out there.

Went on a HUGE Air binge yesterday.
About 4 hours worth of listening. At 8 pm, listened till I fell asleep.
Woke at 4 am and jammed Open Air Suite twice.
Like a sledgehammer to the back of the head, I’m still floored. Exactly what I needed at this exact moment in time.
The interaction and level of interplay/listening in this trio is next dimension shizzle.
I’m extremely impressed by Hopkins work with the bow, extremely creative and very precise. His attack of notes with the bow is soooooo tasty and commanding. No screeching « floppy » initial attack, very crisp and articulated .Nuances are incredible.
Perfect fit for my « usual weird @$$ » self.
I cant thank you enough for sharing such incredible music.

Damn straight it is.
I love discovering new stuff, this time it hit my like an atomic bomb. Especially since its a Bass, drum, woodwind trio.
Just kicking myself because I came soooo close to knowing about them way back from listening to Art E of CHi , Braxton, Chico, Bowie and all the cats from the Chicago scene.

I freakin love his album triplicate with Holland and Dejohnette.
Not uderstanding doesn't bother me at all as long as the power/energy et magic sauce is there.

I first became aware of him at a show back in the mid 80s when he was in Holland's great quintet. The same small Seattle club had in Jack D's band with David Murray the same week too.
Different, but made me think of another favorite group....do you know Old and New Dreams? One of my favorite groups, ever.
