Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

Checking out Gojira right now. I'm starting with Magma but if you recommend particular records, please say so.

I also love l’enfant savage... he growls and sings heavier so different to Magma but the compositions are just so heavy... like when the whole band comes in with an accent it’s just !BOOOOM!

Prime example of what I mean for gojira.... the weird chorus / pre chorus change of tempo into accent just freaking kills

Okay, so, sold the Digitakt, got a Roland TR08S coming, as I think that might be a bit more intuitive for a beats-challenged person such as myself. Anyone have any experience with that machine?

Never tried it, but from I know of it its kinda of a modern take on the 808 with more options.
(Layering kick, snare etc....patterns with the same button sequencer)
Still basically a step sequencer. But I think you can tweak it more the an OG 808 live.

I dont remember how the samples work if you want to import your own sounds.
Seems like an awesome machine to work with.

i’ve known dan for years. he’s played in one of my things for a bit. runs the label that i put one of my things out on. sick trumpet player. had played with a lot of my compatriots.

jake is someone who i’ve know. for a bit; he’s played with a few friends.

Ya, the 808 now is pretty much used as a sub bass line more than "drums".
But the sounds always pop up, like the 808 hh as a secondary track or layers of 808 snare with some other samples

I would include Cuong Vu's trio in anything jazz/rock discussion wise. One of my favorite groups. I'm a huge fan. Here's a clip with Fuze joining them.

Been a fan of Fuze since the 1st Screaming Headless Torsos album.
I transcribed that entire record, Fima Ephron on bass......awesome playing.

Fima's a bad dude. Great guy. Saw him with Adam Roger's Dice at the 55.

The bass that Stomu Takeishi is playing is an old Klein fretless. Not many Klein basses were made. Stomu is one of my all time favorite "bass players". As a great drummer once put it, "Stomu is creating an entire universe with his playing."

Late 90s NYC stuff. Still have all the records and the live Toros DVD.
Gene Lake just had taken over from Jojo on drums for the Torsos. Crazy MOFO, I first heard Gene Lake with Steve Coleman and 5 elements live from Paris albums.
Way of the Cypher, Myth Modes and means...then Curves of live.

Way of the Cypher completely flipped my world upside down.
Still does.

yeah. not much. i saw them open for stare baby in l.a. one of those clubs where the overhype the drums. in both bands, the drums were louder in the mix than the guitars, let alone the basses.

The Roland is pretty straight ahead linear stuff. I’ll be interested in your findings as the only reason I can see for choosing it over a Digitakt is the 808 sound. Elektron can seem unintuitive at first, but it’s sequencer is so powerful with parameter locking, trig conditions, trigless trigs, etc., which doesn’t mean you have to use those features all the time.
