Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

I wasn’t planning on posting a pic on this Hilbish Sol Invictus here, and I already posted the pic in two other threads...
So, other than being big enough to hide a pizza under it (the DA120 next to it is a gigantic pedal, trust me)...
It’s worth noting that this fire breathing beast will get you the Doom 101 sound with a down-tuned bass. I didn’t love the high gain sound with my Mustang PJ, though the barely-dirty tone was quite nice. Then I plugged in my BEAD bass and it all made sense. It snarls in all the right places, and the heavy distortion on the lowest notes didn’t turn to mud. Instead things just worked.
I plugged into the same delay + reverb settings as I used on the last track I posted, Xoiamby, and put a volume pedal before the Sol preamp and I was impressed with the result. I’ll work on recording it soon, but I’m probably going to be tweaking settings for a bit.

I haven't been on a "dirt" quest in years but recently I've been looking for something else to try with my band. (We have enough stuff for a 2nd album....yay.....like anyone cares.
I play C standard and it has to be thick and heavy but still very defined for the fast tremolo picking of grind and black metal type stuff. Current set up is mxr distortion (rat circuit) and an old as crap VT bass.
I has to be ONE sound.....i can't switch sounds, its too fast of a gig and songs change on a dime.....no time to waste on tap dancing for dirt tones......
I do enough of that with on/off of channels, harmonizers and delay......

If you want some classic Doom, this could do it, but it’s not cheap. Have played through a Sunn Beta? That’s the inspiration for this beast.

Nah....it has to be tighter than the "doom" type dirt. Thus the choice of the mxr rat and the vt bass.
On the guitar side its my BYOC swede (hm2 clone with same chip as the Japanese boss version) with everything dimed. It can slice you in half.

When it comes to a "dirt quest", that's almost as bad as a delay quest. Endless combinations of bass, amp, pedal, and knob settings can make you crazy trying to find that one tone. With my Rickenbacker in two-channel setup it's basically 2^2 the number of combinations to try. Fortunately my band doesn't require much more than some clank and overdrive or I'd go broke tone-chasing.

Seeing as they’re made here it’ll be cheaper and theoretically quicker to grab one locally. Well, in the same country at least.

i always had the issue of too hard to play dirt fast ( have one song that has Slow doom intro and chorus but fast thrash verse) so ended up with the mxr rat too... led mode with the blend is awesome... otherwise my “usual” tones are Mbd1 or cog mini 66... apart from my green muff clone (cos it just needs THAT sound) I find everything else just works better with a touch of clean blend in it.
on a side note - looked at getting a mini nova again... just for the “hands on” of hardware synth... but after listening to demos again realised I can do all the same things now I have an FM synth, Wavetable synth and add versus substractive type vst synths... that and the additional plugins in reaper and dare say I’d be set for years if I try to explore them all to their depths!
Indeed, I absolutely love the W&C Tall font Russian, thick fat pillow of fuzz.
But as soon as you get fast with the pick it turns in to mush.
MBD1 and 2 sound awesome but I’d have to try the out with the whole band mix....euh I mean mess.......
It’s also quite expensive over hear in Ole Quebec.......like 350 cad plus shipping......(puke)
But what I have works, its just the « wanting to try something else » to change up things kinda mood I’m in. Maybe I just need to tweak the settings between the VT and MXR rat.....
Not to mention just the placement of a cab in a room can change everything.....soooooooo may variables......I’m gonna end up going Efffff this isssshhhh and just play the living $hit out of my gear. Not the type of project where cork sniffing micro differences in dirt tones will do anything to make the songs better.

I've had an MBD-1 on my board for the past ~3 years, and it completely satiated my Dirt GAS...specifically because it works in the whole band mix: The bottom doesn't drop out, the top doesn't turn to fizz, it doesn't "cut through" so much as "continue to support the foundation" like any good bass should. It's just also a hellaciously raging distortion. The first time I stepped on it in a band situation it took about four meaures of music before the drummer stopped playing, stood up, pointed at the MBD-1 and yelled "WHAT IS THAT THING?!?!?!"
I'm not a speed player, but agree about wanting tighter distortions. For overdrive I still love my Xotic BB. Not the TB flavour of the month any more, but I don't care. For all out rage, I have had good luck with the Idiotbox Blower Box, and also the Source Audio Bass OFD), which by itself isn't amazing sounding but works really well in a mix (and is cheap as hell). I have always tended toward Brassmaster type fuzzes, and currently love my VFE Woodchipper, which actually adds low end. Back in the days of it being safe to be in a closed room with people not in my household, my bandmates actually requested it from time to time for extra evil. YMMV. Off to check out the MBD videos in 3...2...1...

Did someone say dirt pedals?? I love dirt pedals as much as I love reverb pedals...hahaha. I have a few at the moment. For an incredibly versatile one that has tons of low end with a clean blend, and stays super clear even at maximum drive, the Malaise Forever Golden Guillotine is absolutely brilliant. He makes them in small batches. What a surprise that one turned out to be. For another really versatile one there's always the smallsound/bigsound mini. I finally just got one and now I know why people are always talking about it. For a dark, rich sounding drive with an incredible clean blend I have an Electronic Audio Experiments Claymore. He only made seven of them, but I hear he'll be revamping the design (closer to his current Longsword) and rereleasing it. Keep an eye on that one for sure. Electrofoods also makes some of my favorite dirt pedals. If you like a Rat sound their Nepenthes is the best of that design that I've heard on bass...and everything they make is amazing.
Oh yeah I forgot about my bead fuzz brassmaster clone... kinda funny in that my metal band doesn’t leave many places for different types of dirt... usually just leave the cog mini 66 on for most the songs. And yet somehow I have 5 od/distortion/fuzz pedals. I guess makes more sense than 5 reverb pedals or 5 chorus pedals. *insert shrug emoji*
and yeah I hear you about price of pedals. I usually sell a pedal to fund a pedal or save up once or twice a year, the price of conversion from US to AUD is very very badddd
