Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

errr... let's see:

Steely Dan - Aja to me is an extremely impressive album from a production standpoint: Fabulous musicianship. Fabulous engineering. Fabulous arranging. I can listen to that album and genuinely appreciate the craft that it took to make. But holy crap are the compositions meandering, arbitrary, and directionless, the lyrics are the height of pretentious drivel, and Donald Fagen's voice is more a mewling whine of affectation than actual "singing".

And I think that's Steely Dan's best work.

Though I'll give them this: "My Old School" (from an earlier album) is a killer single. imho their best tune. But I tend to throw up in my mouth when forced to listen to more than half a song at a time of theirs.

Pink Floyd - in the same way that Aja is an extremely impressive album from a production standpoint, I will concede -- nay, I will argue vociferously! -- that Dark Side Of The Moon is an extremely impressive album from a production standpoint. Most of what they recorded prior was more interesting compositionally and/or (at least) adventurously. Everything they recorded afterwards sucked ass. And their entire repertoire suffered from being overplayed on FM radio in the 70s and 80s.

Re: Steely Dan.

Once I transcribed Peg and Kid Charlemagne (never got Kid C up to par.... :(.....)about 20 years ago.....I couldn’t listen to them anymore.
Awesome band, genius production.
Just me.....couldn’t. If you like em and make you happy.....keep on keeping on!!!!

I sometimes listen to them by little bits but never entire records.

yeah, Jimmy was just a funny character on the scene. I have a certain affection for the Blasters and love Phil’s voice. Fats was next level

awesome story! Love Bad Brains

Steely Dan? Yeah, I dunno. Can think of a couple clever tunes, but overall just too clinical to me.

Pink Floyd? As a long time recording/production nerd I had to give them their due. Dark Side is a masterpiece from a production point of view. That said, I’ve listened to it all the way through maybe three times. I think I admire it more than enjoy it. Thought Animals and Wish You Were Here we’re good too. Hated The Wall when it came out and haven’t paid attention since, though I’m sure there’s some good stuff in there.
I remember really liking Roger Waters “The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking” when it came out, but not sure I’d feel the same way now. I wonder a lot about that. How does certain music currently hold up to my memories of it from 30+ years ago? Oregon? Gonna go look em up to see :)
Oregon's amazing, although their later stuff with Trilok Gurtu on percussion was not as good as the old stuff.

Overproduced? That's my take on that one.

there’s that. i think the drugs had really started to kick in and the songs were not as good as they had been.

@Bob_Ross i’m gonna say aja is not their best (royal scam, as i’ve noted before). we can have a fist fight whenever we meet.

Testing out the new (z)ambiance rig.
As currently routed:
- Bass into Terminal slot 1. This allows for a looper to be inserted for the dry signal.

- Terminal slot 1 sends the signal to the Duncan Comp, the Sol Invictus. Sol’s Instrument Out will send the channel A, B or A+B at Inst level out. It then goes into the DSM Cab Sim. Sol’s individual outs for channels A and B are available should I want to run them direct to the DAW Interface. Currently it is routed so the Line Level our goes to the DAW, which enables me to record a dry signal and apply plugin sims, while also direct-monitoring using the DSM Sim sound as an approximation. No need to run a smaller buffer and smash my CPU.
- DSM Cab Sim routes back to the Terminal slot 2, which taps the Send signal and routes it to the Empress Echo and Reverb. The Empress pedals send stereo to the mixer. Since the Terminal is half-normal the dry signal passes to the slot 2 output.
- Slot 2 output routes to slot 3, which allows for an insert of a looper or Zoia or whatever else I want. The signal then goes through to the mixer.

It’s a lot of wires, but it allows me to run a clean/dirty signal from the Sol, with the blended signal getting routed to the time-based pedals and the DAW/mixer at the same time, and the option to easily route the clean and dirty signals from the Sol into separate DAW tracks, or send them so knows where else.

Now, if I could only play something worth recording ;)

Clips!!!

Soon.
I’ve swapped out the Duncan Comp for the Zoia. It’s a primitive use for it, but it’s the Zoia’s Noise Gate comes in handy. I’ve also patched a Comp module in after the Gate, which isn’t as nice as the Duncan, but it’s something.

The Zoia only has the L in/out patched now, so I could easily pop the R in/out in the game using the Terminal.

I’ll be making more noises through the day.

that’s very cool.

process?
Thanks. Compared to what you do it’s primitive. Process involves alcohol.
Ottobit bit crusher and filter to make 4 layers of loops in blooper. Hit play bring layers in out and use an expression on the Dark World to mix in “fog” . Middle section stutter function on ottobit dry bass. Bring reverb back in use layers and modifiers on blooper. Dunno if that makes sense or is of any help. Thanks for listening.

I'm more flabbergasted that someone actually knows how garage band works.

:D

I use garageband as my DAW these days. I used to be a protools guy...ironically, I have my setup going into my old digi002 mixing board and then it runs into an iRig into an iPad and Garageband. LoL.

dug the clip @mrgittleman - curious if you ever owned a MØRCH singlecut bass?
