So it really is better to eat before being eaten, kill before being killed....
You don't need to run faster than the bear. Just faster than your buddy.I used to see bears outside my aunt's farm in Pennsylvania. Also you can spot them in the Shenandoah mountains here in Virginia not too far from DC. Generally east coast black bears are shy and will go away from humans if you make noise. Except for the idiot tourists who feed them which makes them dangerous; even then black bear attacks are really rare. Still have to be careful, of course.
Now out in northwest you've got brown grizzly bears, which are a whole different story. Those things are monsters in the woods.

I think pretty much my life expectancy would be reduced to a few hours thrown out into any wild environment survival type thing.i'd imagine an emu would gut you easily, too.

Something would get me......
anyone watch “grizzly man” by werner herzog?
Summers are short up here, there are more people than trees, there's a huge appreciation for the arts and nature, it's not crowded, it's one of the least religious and most liberal, so all wins in my book (well, except for the short summer - it's like 6 months of winter).
That’s exactly how I felt when I discovered my favorite club in LA.
