Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

pro tip: beret and gauloises.
Jazz university true story:

I remember the jazz vocal teacher telling me to get off stage while I was setting up to back up a masters exam. 50mins set, all standards in every style. Fast, bebop, swing, bossa , ballads the whole 9 yards.
Was dressed pretty much exactly late 90s NYC hip hop style. Hey, I was young and peeved. Think white dude dressed like Hub that pulled it off. Ahahahha
He told me "musicians only here!!!...this is not the time for bad jokes!!!!"
(All exams where public at my university)

I said, dude, I play bass. He looked at the other teachers and thought I was trying to pull a fast one on him. My bass teacher politely told him to shut the eff up and leave me alone.

I think the person at the exam got an A-......

took me back to how i dressed for orchestra rehearsals at university.

ah youth.

Yeah, it's take a while for me to come down off of the boutique ledge and buy some less-boutiquey pedals, but I've been happy with my Boss stuff, so far.

...

Funny story - when I was in my 20's and was an overplaying Jaco wannabe (Punk Jazz was so appropriate for me, I had the jazz mindset but not the chops), someone gave me a Pablo Moses dub album. I didn't even know about dub reggae, but I was so enthralled, because I could hear the basslines so good. I learned that whole album, and it shifted my perspective in a pretty radical way. My wankery started on a downward trajectory from that point on. I can still wank like the best of em, but I love just throwing on a Laswell album and playing the same hypnotic groove for 20 minutes.

boss makes really serviceable stuff. not fancy sounds like some, but i like to build textures by blending generic sounds. maybe i'm just old and don't get some of the newer, more complicated things.

been overplaying for 50 years.

Barefoot I hope!!

ha. don't think i did that. maybe.

black sleeveless t-shirt, cutoff white jeans. maybe a doo-rag sorta thing.

i'd get the whole bass section to hold up their bows and say, "forged by a god. foretold by a wizard. found by a king." (excalibur was out around then.)

most of the orchestra would laugh. the tightasses just rolled their eyes.

Ok. Already spent a few hours with the geiger counter. Quite a complex machine once you dig in, very complex.
I think I'm doing something illegal here.....this is nuts.
Dual channels. Analog synth split dry and geiger.counter channels.

(Sorry for the non stop posts....)

In grad school I conducted an original large ensemble composition using a jumbo-sized SlimJim instead of a baton. As the piece proceeded I would eat it bit by bit, until by the Coda I had this 1" stub of meatstick in my hand. 99% of the orchestra and audience loved it

...but man, I lived for that other 1%

Epic.
I would pay to see that slim Jim stunt.
The faces of those 1%, so awesome youcan tast the tension. I love it.

"Coda people!!!" Points soloist with 1 inch piece of dried meat.
Simply magical. I would have peed myself I think.

Man. I knew we could hand.

Ok one of mine again:
During the mandatory choral shows, me and some of my buddies would sit front row with obscene drawings and nudy pics to make the ones singing laugh, choke up and get bad grades.
This would soooooo not fly these days.

The choral teacher was sooooooo mad.
The faculty banned students in the front row because of us.
I would totally do it again.
Priceless
