This. MC is very deep and extremely varied.
Manipulation of sound. Deep listening. (See Pauline Oliveros for references)
Back in the 50s and 60s many "creative lab collectives" united to explore new technologies.
Sound generating to recording to tape manipulation. (Henri, Schaeffer, Oliveros, Schoenberg....)

IMO they kicked the classical dudes in the nuts to wake them up and make it move forward from the purists.

Also can be modification/manipulation of recorded sound.
Or even music concerts for radio receivers (that was Stockhausen) I believe it was called short waves and used 6 receivers.

So yes, some might consider it "noise" but it can just be Pauline screwing around with the tape head of a 3 inch tape machine she spliced and diced. (i think others did that for her, as I recall she hated cutting and slicing tape.....)

Noise, art.....self expression IMO.
Am I making sense?(life long struggle to write clear and concise thoughts and reflexions)

In my instance for this, Im as much influenced by the bomb squad, Ornette, power electronics and Oliveros all at once. One big mix or cluster %?$# of stuff.

IMO the Bomb Squad are the most criminally underrated collectives of the 20th century.

panning:

not to be totally in contradiction mode, but an orchestra had the basses in the right, so acoustic music doesn’t always have “bass in the center.”

i like having two bass drums a bit off center so i can have them doing different parts that become antiphonal. supplies movement.

the hydrasynth is great at having different panning for oscillators. one of my favorite things is to have osc 3 dead center (same range as osc 1/2) and osc 1/2 panned left and right. and then have each one’s panning modulated by a different lfo. that way i get panning movement across the stereo field. using lrc or pong delays can further this.

yeah. i think mc being “noise” was sometimes put out there by classical folks who wanted the symphony to go in forever.

bomb squad. amazing and live changing for me.

then there are people like helmut lachenmann, who does what he calls musique concrete instrumentale.

i saw one live performance and it was interesting in that he really pays attention to the stereo field and spatial concerns.



ps. you guys know kurt schwitters’ “ursonate”?

Helmut is freakin cool. His philosophy of contradictions in fascinating yet very confusing.
Haven't looked him up in years.

I think I heard that in school years ago.
I'll look it up.

There is certainly a better term than 'noise' that I should have used. I probably mean 'abstract and sometimes abrasive'. Does that make more sense? This is something I will admit, readily, of not knowing much about, other than what I learned in music classes or in documentaries.

i don’t know helmut’s philosophy, just his music. i have a friend who dislikes him a lot because of his disdain for improvisation. oh well!

schwitters did ursonate, a sound poem in a made-ip language. was a collage artist in the dada movement who also did amazing things to his house, which he called the merzbau (sound familiar?).

Havent listened to helmut in years, I cant remember.
His philosophy, is kind of a masochistic thing.
Denying himself what he loves. (from what I remember......)

Unrelated to anything.
I’ve been organizing music files on my computer. I’m getting ready to buy a new Mac, so I’m doing maintenance I’ve been avoiding, including transferring files to a dedicated music laptop I have. I bought it so I wasn’t dragging my personal laptop full of everything to shows, on case of theft or accidents.

This all motivated me to look at some physical files I have. I organized 15 years of concert tickets and local paper clippings. I’ll be stuffing them into a scrapbook soon. I forgot about some of the shows I had seen, and I was reminded of good times with old friends. I’m surprised that it hit me as hard as it did, but it was great to get lost in looking back at where I was at those points in my life.

The old times weren’t the most ambient ;)

I've always mixed my basses towards the center, but a lot of times they seem to sit a bit better when slightly off center. I do that same kind of panning on the Hydra and Iridium.

So, a bazillion threads ago, or maybe five, we were about the pads and getting a real synth/not bass guitar sound out of the board. That convo inspired me to do something that night, which was cool, as I've been neglecting the board, lately. Just an ambient thing done on the Aeros looper.

Sounds are mostly Meris Enzo/Merc 7, some Meris Polymoon, Eventide H9, and the EHX Mel 9, on the CB 6-string. The Particle got sent back because it bricked when I updated it. But it'll be back.

Here's another old drone track of mine, a conceptual sound art piece "RBG (an examination in chromesthesia)", and with an actual "music video" I made for it :


An examination in chromesthesia:

The wavelengths of the 3 primary colors our optic nerves can perceive has been transposed and transformed to sound within the audible spectrum through a sinus wave generator.

A higher and a lower pitch for each of the 3 colors has been arranged into this musical piece.


Still with the "Fjernsind" project, it just used to share my own name, hence why some "Fjernsind" YouTube videos still figures as "Jacob Læby".
