pretty sure dlr copped a lot of 20/30s jazz stuff, which sets him apart from most metal/hard rock guys.

ted templeman wanted to fire him at first cause he didn’t have the quintessential hard rock voice (he actually thought of hagar before the first album).

then he realized what smart dude he was and realized he was an asset.

Nothing beats isolated DLR.
His melody is solid, but the ad libs are where it's at.

I saw the DLR VH as my first concert. Had a blast. He’s not the greatest singer but he was good at what he did. After he left, they sucked IMO

I love DLR-era Van Halen but he is easy to make fun of. Rockso was at least in part based off of him

On the DLR train, I love this clip of him on Letterman. He starts talking about art and technology as a form of interaction (it picks up from a previous clip that I still need to watch) and gets into a discussion of Tomata du Plenty of The Screamers.

He's an even more uninteresting singer than I'd previously realized. Like some drunk guy at a party. I mean, what an uninteresting voice.

It’s also an age old story on TB that the right sound in a mix isn’t always a great isolated sound. That band was a function of all of those guys doing what they did to create a sum greater than the parts. There are probably plenty of good and bad things to be said about each member, but that band killed it. It’s similar to all the heat Lars takes for his drumming ability, yet the Metallica legacy speaks for itself.

On a low frequency note, my hi-fi system is glitching and it’s time for an amp upgrade (looking at a couple NAD options). In the meantime I’ve been plugging in my Barefaced BB2 PA rig for casual listening. I put on Vegas by Crystal Method and there are a few delightful, pillowy sub bursts on that record that I’ve never noticed. My hi-fi is great but it doesn’t have that sub extension, so that revelation caught my ears.

I never heard of triphop until the mid 2000s and then I became a huge Portishead fan. I'm always late to parties.

Crystal Method and Orbital was my first EDM show back around 2000. I was hooked.

Yeah Orbital was something I stumbled on in the mid 90s when I saw a cool video late night on MTV. Insides was the name of the album I think, still a classic.

Thing is when a lot of this music was happening in the 90s I wasn't paying much attention; too busy working on my engineering degree and was taking a break from playing music of any sort. I heard some stuff I liked by accident, Sneaker Pimps for example, but it passed by quick and I didn't know there were names for all these things like "triphop", "post grunge", etc.

My favorite Portishead record is by far Third. On a good set of headphones that thing is crazy.

Yes, Third is their masterwork, and so much different than their earlier stuff. When it came out I listened to it over and over.

Louis is a friend of mine, and the brain behind AMF. He recently did a COVID themed three-day performance, and worked remotely with my friend Trevor in San Diego (the guy I worked with a bunch last October).
This should be an interesting watch. I'm expecting contact mics, weird sounds, and blood (it's part of his art, so beware if you are sensitive to that).

our old ( very old) Harman-Kardon died and splurged on a Yamaha. Turned out to be really worth it.
