Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

our old ( very old) Harman-Kardon died and splurged on a Yamaha. Turned out to be really worth it.
I’ve got some floor-standing B&W (not BMW) speakers that are fantastic. I just need a more reliable amp, and preferably a cooler running class D. My apartment heats up in the summer, so class D would be appreciated.

that said, getting deep subs for EDM stuff is fantastic.

From EVH and brown tone to EDM and brown notes. This thread delivers.
Definitely
On brown notes kids wanted me to play my bass through my cab for the first time in a long time ( I usually just practice through headphones)... put the pedalboard on and turn on the amp... it’s so louddddd... whoops sorry kids. Realised that yep, all my pedals sound the same as through headphones except louder and better... I miss band practice, it’s been almost 18 months :(

I gotta stop trying to fool myself. Bass playing is aggravating my back pain, so I'm taking a few weeks off to see how things improve with some rehab and time off. It's back into the synth and laptop world for a bit.

I packed up all my bass gear tonight, so I can’t get at it easily. I expect I’ll cave and visit a doctor soon (much as I want to believe this will go away on its own).

Look after yourself... despite my love of it, I cannot headbang anymore due to a neck injury... even doing computer work for too long gets me on the verge of tension headaches and migraine symptoms from it :(
(Had that this morning ouch)

see a doc and hope you get the right treatment for it

Even when sitting?

Since I don't have a build thread for the touch guitar, I'm posting progress here. I went with Aero for pickups because Larry (the owner) has the same history of technology bug I do, and he was into it as a (very) custom project. I also talked with Nordstrand and they were great but the options they gave me didn't appeal as much. Anyway, the pickup is shipping out from the Big Island on Monday.

I generally like split coil humbucking with extended range in the highs and low (more mids than a single coil, less comb filtering than an in-line humbucker), so we went with an in-line split coil with one pole piece per string. I might actually decide it's too much attack that way with the ash/maple/pao ferro setup, but I wanted to try it. The measurements for the pole pieces are exact for where the pickup will be in the instrument.

I was planning it as a 2-pickup instrument but since custom pickups are expensive, we decided to start with 1 and see if I like it. I am starting to think about making it a 1-pickup instrument....

not that you asked . . .

ime, neck problems can be exacerbated by smartphone, tablet and laptop use if you're looking *down* all the time.

if you keep the screen at eye level when your head is erect, you'll cause less stress on your neck. it's worth noting that all the nerve bundles for your hands and arms come out of your upper spine, including the neck. imo, if you compress them, you're gonna be in trouble.

last (and in know this is not possible for people who have had serious injury), ime, core muscles (especially stomach) help keep your spine from having more stress.

The phone and laptop life is definitely a contributing factor. With the synth and computer production I can get things in better positions and make playing and creating less painful. With bass, it’s just not possible with my specific issues. I have to sit, and with my left-side nerve damage my posture is a compromise to get my left hand mobile. It’s a losing battle.

Since I haven’t been able to go to the gym in a year I’ve lost a lot of strength, and it’s showing. All my pain is in the low back, but it certainly follows from all the screen time that I have as part of my day job.

I’m having another episode of “so is this the point where I admit I need to stop playing bass?” I know that day is coming.

i've been through the "i may not be able to play again" thing twice—though probably not to the degree that you are.

still (knowing that i may be full of crap), i do suggest thinking about altering the ergonomics of your work situation . . . might help.

i changed a number of things to combat my issues, including diet (fewer carbohydrates).

(and the lower back supports the middle back, which supports the neck . . . so)

ymmv, etc.

I appreciate the concern and suggestions. The work station has been addressed for a while. I have multiple sitting and standing arrangements that I cycle through daily. I take stretching, yoga, and walking breaks. I’m sure folks have had it worse than whatever it is I’m dealing with now and still made recovery. I’m just dreading the process. Another never ending series of doc and therapy visits. Imaging, consults, therapy. And all those co-pays and premiums, which I could use to buy more gear ;)

My hi-fi has been acting weird, so I’m using it less and using my Barefaced BB2 cabs and Adam A7Xmonitors more. I rearranged my room today and connected both speakers to the same mixer, with the Control Room output going to the Adam monitors, and the Master going to the Barefaced PA. While testing the connections, I unintentionally turned up both sets of outputs, and that pairing is fantastic. I’m seriously wondering if I will ever go back to the hi-fi :roflmao:

The playback on Clutch and Crystal Method is solid.

powered speakers have not yet become fashionable in the hi fi world (to my knowledge) but they make so much sense.

I was thinking about the money end but didn’t want to bring it up. And my part time job is patient, so I’m with you there.
