Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

I have had some issues with pain, and in places I've never had issues with before.. all of this screen time has been a nightmare on the body. I got a sitting/standing desk. Helped a great deal. Five weeks ago I started working with a personal trainer to help me strengthen my body back up. On my own at home I was hurting myself over and over again. We're still dialing in exercises that help without hurting, but I feel it was the best decision that I could have made for myself.

It’s a catch 22 for me. I’ve got a history that makes me really worried about the possibility of covid, but also about the damage I’m doing by being so isolated. I’ve got an option to visit a personal trainer or therapist, but I don’t want to interact with more people than is absolutely necessary. Time to pick my poison. I know folks who have had the virus and come out the other side safely. I know folks who haven’t contracted it despite jobs requiring human contact. I also know folks who have suffered lasting effects and had loved ones die from it. I’ve also got the same access to national and local statistics as everyone else. At some point I’ve just gotta make a “lesser of two evils” choice.

Depending on the place, a dr visit may be low risk assuming you double mask, wash your hands, etc. There are no guarantees, but I go to the hospital once a month and it’s gotten pretty ok. At first it was lots of old people taking their noses out and me having an internal debate about whether to say anything, but apparently they’ve now gotten the memo.

and if you are talking talk therapy (as opposed to PT), that works fine on the phone.

Sorry if I wasn't clear...I'm getting personal training on Zoom from a friend of a friend. It's not ideal, but better than putting myself in harm's way.

It’s been tough. I certainly appreciate the camaraderie of all the regulars here.

BTW - @ugly_bassplayer how are you feeling post-show?
Great, vox held up better than expected. (Used some overdrive and octave down to help dirty it up)
Had a blast. Was weird with no audience and only a live stream, you can’t read the crowd. So I went all in head first. Could barely walk after the 10 mins set, adrenaline dump probably.
Never thought I’d do this project live, but I’d do it again anytime.

I was also the «surprise guest » opening act, so I had nothing to loose. I went for the kill/

Anyone else here finding it difficult to stay focused? I'm not living in my own place...staying with family. Incredibly grateful, but difficult to have moments to myself to even grieve when need be. I find that I can focus on a project once I get started, but after I've finished I feel super down for a bit....until I find the strength to begin something new. This seems to be the pattern. It's difficult to focus on the good stuff when the outside world is so very bad (covid, the rise of white nationalism, the further poisoning within politics, the way that non white folks in the world are continued to be treated, the loss of everything that I and others have ever worked for, the uncertainty of everything).

I’m with you. The covid issues, including working from home and revising social patterns and economic shifts, along with the politics and election cycle has made 2020/2021 a rough period in America, and I’m sure in the rest of the world. It’s been draining and stressful, and it’s taking a toll on my focus.

My work-world is a blur of emails and fire drills. Every week is a new priority which is forgotten about the following week, and deferred in order to manage the fire drill for that week. It’s desensitizing, because when everything is top priority then nothing is top priority.

I’ve found myself downsizing lots of “things” in an effort to help stay focused. I’m not sure if it’s nesting, or coping, or what, but I found lots of my trinkets kept to remind me of things have become clutter and distracting. I’ve organized a few things around the house, probably as a way to feel a sense of control over my surroundings. I’ve been deleting pictures, hacking acquaintances from FB, and throwing out old clothes. They’ve become reminders of a self that I don’t feel connected to, and clutter that I have to navigate daily. My floors and counters are dirtier than when I spent time out of the house each day, and my motivation to clean and look presentable for visitors has vaporized.

Actually, packing away my bass gear might help me focus. Fewer pedals, and fewer instruments to grab could be a clarifying experience.

I know how you feel...
i guess I’m lucky compared to you guys - only had mandatory stay at home for 2 months or so before we went to hybrid model of in workplaces and work from home... I elected to go back to office full time as I struggled working from home with only wife and kids interaction, hard to juggle family and work lines plus felt just can’t be bothered working... mostly my routines were all stuffed and was working after hours to catch up on work so felt like never got a break anywhere.

all I can say is pick your battles and try to find meaning of what you are doing (my wife had to convince me my work was meaningful and I guess had to take a look at things a different angle )or if not take a break, do some stretching or home exercise or something... good luck!

So had a day off today and messed around with the board again... very much love that I swapped nautila for bass clone... and decided the bass whammy once again wasn’t a thing for any band riffs I have but was fun to mess with other affects. Oceans 11 reverb with chorus is dreamy enough... but add fuzz and octave up harmony it’s pretty trippy... only other solution I can think of is get a sub n up and swap it out for the muff clone... cog mini 66, mbd1, mxr bass distortion and bead fuzz seeks like enough dirt... just for convenience sake of saying it all fits in the one board... hah damn GAS.
I guess it’s not a bmw though!

Went to the doc today to get his opinion on my back pain. He took an X-ray and says the disks don’t look like there’s bulging or herniation, and there’s no sign of other symptoms which would indicate those issues. He’s giving me some muscle relaxers, and ordering up a cat scan. Since I had fevers with the back pain twice last year he wants to absolutely rule a few other potential issues out, even though he thinks they are quite unlikely given my current condition. I guess I’m just old and creaky.
