It’s going pretty well, thanks for asking. The thing about that machine is it’s so many different things. I see people use it in ways I don’t understand and they don’t get the ways I’m using it. It’s really a legit instrument in its own right and instruments take awhile to master. And like any instrument, you can develop your own sound and style on it.
I still have a lot to learn, but the Octatrack is my favorite hardware box I’ve ever owned by a huge margin...I’m staying down in the rabbit hole with this thing for the foreseeable future. It’s a tough machine to explain, but I totally get the appeal now.

I wouldnt say I buy into the Black Friday hype, but there were several threads on the Elektronauts forum about different sales and I happened to be looking for software. Started with a couple iPad apps. Got the Waldorf Nave synth. Crazy great if you like the wavetable thing. I personally love it. Amazing synth. Olympia Noise Company just came out with Patterning 2. An incredible update on an already seriously great drum machine. I’d put Patterning 2 up against any drum machine and it was 14 bucks!!! Astounding app, IMO. Got a couple other apps but haven’t messed with em yet.

I’ve also been looking for some mixing/mastering software hoping to outdo some of my stock Logic plugs. Izotope was doing a sale on a Nuetron 8/ Ozone 8 Advanced bundle for $349. Huge discount and I really like it a lot.

All ambient types seriously need to consider this plug in from Waves. It’s a synth called Flow Motion FM Synth (I think). Only $39 right now and I’m just knocked out by it. Huge evolving textural stuff and pretty easy to program your own patches. Incredibly deep. Also includes some custom patches by Richard Devine and some other heavy hitters. Most online demos kinda don’t really show how good this thing is. Just buy it!
I did one jam on it and plan on doing a lot more. This jam is several instances of the synth and nothing else. Put together quickly and still a work in progress, but maybe this little jam can show some of the possibilities

I’m looking at buying a microbrute to run into my pedalboard then laptop to overlay crazy sounds behind our drum tracks for our album / also to play live... we lost our drummer a year ago and now thinking why not go all out and spice up the interlude between tracks / give us a different type of count in for our three piece

nave is really good. same guy also helped design another excellent app (name escapes me right now).



EDIT: was too late last night and my battery was dead.

NLOG Pro is the name of the dev's other synth. an older one, but a good one. recommended.

Man. Building patches for tomorrow’s performance and I’m just blown away by the Empress EchoSystem. Running it into the Empress Reverb is stunning. It’s a huge chunk of change, but those pedals are really top notch, and do things I can’t see other boxes doing. Plus 9v power is a life saver, since I can run them off a One Spot.

Any thoughts on how the bass is getting the distorted tone in Rolling by Soul Coughing?
Right about 1:15 it jumps out, but it is audible throughout the track. That's just phat and gritty. Love it.

Listening to Oso demos and I hear that vibe. Might explain the album title. I know there is a bunch of fretless work on SC albums. I'm sure there was some sonic experimenting.

I happened to luck into an old El Oso bass fuzz and it really does sound like that, so maybe? Has a blend (letting through plenty of that keyboard sound) an almost a wooden tone with some organic sloppiness. It's on my big board along with a Mini and a Grizzly-- so you know it stands on it's own.
