Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

I wish I could have chatted up my barista I used to visit before he shut down with all the covid stuff :(
Was a British guy who used to play spy trance stuff... it was semi weird when you think of it haha, but the guy made the best coffee ever and was very into making his own styles of mix of beans etc and very into his pay trance... if that’s what it was, it was like, super ambient slow beats... very chill... should have asked him what it was when I had the chance arg!

Do you mean "psy trance"?

I'm picturing "spy trance" as some kind of weird 60s secret agent James Bond music somehow mixed with techno.

Did you get your screen issue fixed? How are you liking it, apart from that?

korg/waldorf guys contacted me. work in progress. i updated the firmware, which took care of the weird pops i was having. so far so good.

pretty intuitive to program . . . so far. i was holding back a bit because i wasn't sure if i was going to have to return it. still i was able to do six or so rudimentary patches.

i hope they implement receiving poly aftertouch on it.

i did another bad thing, which has been taking up my time as well.

Imo from what I watched in demos.
That thing is going to be killer live.

But damn, 6 min sample time????
How arw you going to work with that obstacle?
(Genuinely interested, not sarcastique. )

yeah, the sample thing is probably a drawback for a lot of people. right now, it doesn't seem like one because, whenever i think of using samples, i'm always worried about being too cliched (mostly it's been done a lot and i'm not sure i can really add anything to that). i have things on ipad/iphone that i can use to fly in samples or even sample live, which fits my workflow of the past few years pretty well.

right now i'm exploring what i thought i might be able to do with it. the programming thing seems both deep and limited (?). i've had it for two days . . . but i do have some things that i've worked on that i like a bit so far. mostly it lets you fu¢k around with the sounds and make them unpretty, so that pleases me.

i might do a show and tell on soundcloud at some point soon.

I keep wondering if that would have been a better choice for me than the TR-8s, lemme know how it goes.

I'm in the Iridium beta, which has MPE, and that's technically poly at. And it works real well, too.

yep, i was going between those as well. the hook for the tr-8s for me would have been the fm drum sounds. the motion record thing on tuning of different drum sounds (i think you can do this?) was also interesting.

the synth part of the mc-707 isn't interesting as synths *per se* (though it's darned deep), more as messed-up semi-melodic ostinato fodder. the kicker was that you can have different clip lengths/time signatures and speeds going on at the same time in the mc-707. i love phasing rhythmic patterns. it occurs to the me that the clip thing will also be really interesting for this . . . the scatter thing is also pretty cool (gotta get into that one a bit more).

it's rumored that there will be a 2.0 firmware for the mc-707 within the next year, so i'm intrigued to see what will be added.

excellent news about the mpe for the iridium.

Any examples on how you will integrate it live??
Live sampling ?
Sound manipulation?

I would consider six minutes a pretty good amount on a hardware box. Heck, many great records were made on samplers with like 30 seconds of sampling time!

I knew someone would say that, and yes I agree 100%.
Sampler NERD!!!! ;)
(Pays virtual drink of choice)

But guys like Pete Rock on the SP-1200 or DJ Premier with the MPC 60 where chopping in the studio.
Add to that they would often track out to tape in order layer samples. Q-Tip did that with individual drum hits with the multiple outs of his MPC, he even mentioned in an interview that his favorite board for drums was a Neve.

Also, DJ Shadow made ENtroducing... with and old MPC 60, that my friend is simply mind blowing. Straight alien genius shizzle right there. (But I think you already know this :) )

Mr Steubig is gonna use it live, no in the studio.
I have no idea how he’s going to use it, but in my case with my sampler live I need way more than 6 mins.

Entroducing! That record is pure genius. Once DJ Shadow got deep into ProTools I thought his music got way less interesting for quite awhile.
I dunno... I still say 6 minutes ain’t bad :)

Yep, 6 minutes I agree, plenty can be done.

When talking music with my friends (a select few in the know....) I often compare DJ Shadow to Austin Powers when he gets his “MOJO” stolen.
Same with RZA, he fell off HARD!!!!! Anything past Iron Flag (late 2001) is PAINFULLY bad.

:D

Holla if you find an old MPC in a dumpster, these hipster kids drove the prices up 100% in the last year alone!!!!! I could get a MPC 1000 for around 500$ cad now.....nothing under 1000$.
Even worse with the 2000xl

:banghead:

wasn’t intending to live sampling.

mostly i’m thinking of having building blocks that i create tracks out of in a spontaneous process (that is, live, improvised) and build aggregates and layers.

if i use it *live* live, i wouldn’t be using it that way. least ways, it what i wanted to do.

so far, i find it much more intuitive to do drum machine parts with the mc than i do with ableton (but i haven’t used an external controller on that).
