Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

Having an odd problem, hoping one you more technically-minded people may have an idea. My current setup uses a large bypass looper that has an insert for the volume pedal. I use a Moog expression pedal as a volume pedal, works fine. But lately, for some reason, if I have the channel with my Boss MD-500 active, anything below the maximum volume on the volume pedal has a nasty hum. All the way up? It's quiet. Go down just a bit, the hum/buzz appears. It doesn't seem to happen with any other pedals. Any ideas?

Impedance miss match of the volume pedal and the series 500??

Check the boss manual what Impedance is recommended as a volume or expression pedal. Then check the value of the volume pedal you use.

That would be the 1st thing would check.

Edit: Also volume pedals react very differently to buffered and non buffered pedals. Check that out also. Some need to have the volume pedal before, some after depending on what volume pedal is used and where the buffers are located in the signal path.

Realistically, what I’ve been looking at is a new case (to hold the new stuff), the Sequencer, and the DSP module, which would probably run $1,200-1,500. That’s 1/3 of what I’m guessing the system will cost. I’ve got good outboard effects, and I can sequence laptop midi, so it’s not like I can’t do plenty with my current rig.

That does help, I'll have a look. Maybe I need to get an actual volume pedal instead of going this route.

You mean the impedance of the part on the looper where the vol pedal goes? Don't know.

What I'm also trying to figure out is how long this problem has been going on, and maybe I never noticed it. Since I got the new board, I'm finding how much of my noises and such had to do with some cables, or power or something not connecting. It's only recently that I've had pretty silent output, in terms of noise.

Noise trouble shooting SUX!!!!
It can be freakin anything!!!!!
From a single scratchy cable to the electrical circuit of the room you’re in to simply a defective pedal.
Don’t forget cross talk and neon lights!!!

I'm generally okay with most Trek up to the JJ Abrams reboot abortions, which is when I quit watching any new stuff. The original stuff up to Wrath of Khan is my favorite. Unlike a lot of people I loved the first movie because it was big and slow and was more about making you think than mindless action, so I know I'm not in the majority, but the soundtrack alone for that first film is awesome.

I also loved the first movie. We watch it every few years -- there's something about the look of it that also works for me. I don't view the JJ Abrams stuff as the "same" but don't mind them, and actually love what he does with lens flare.

I do think Discovery, especially after the first few episodes, is really good. But The Expanse and Battlestar Galactica both top newer Trek for me.

Let's face it, though. At this point in the pandemic, my already low TV standards are slipping.

+1 on The Expanse!

But yeah that first Trek movie gave me a sense of awe and wonder that most sci fi movies don't. The V'ger flyover scene was amazing and kind of terrifying for me when I saw it in the theater as a kid. And the sound that was associated with V'ger was an awesome instrument called a "blaster beam" that scared me to death because the sound was so loud. It's that deep twangy sounding thing in this.

I can’t find it but I did see a YouTube video once on the instrument in question and it was just reaalllllllllyyyy long!

I have too much streaming stuff to sign up for another one to watch expanse but I’ve read and love all the books so far... want the next one to be published!

I view discovery as “light hearted entertainment with out the serious thinking” compared to all the 90’s trek and other movies (similar for the abram movies). Just enjoy it for what it is now even though it can’t compare my beloved ds9.
