That's how I feel about it, too. My wife and I have good jobs, I have no kids, and less debt than most Americans. I'm incredibly lucky, I realize that. I don't collect gear. If it's not used, I sell it, with few exceptions.
Kids definitely, but also I think I have deep roots in the OG Skateboard mentality.you also have 85 kids.
most (not all) of my gear has been buy and sell or gig money being churned in for almost 48 years!
no long-term card debt, either.
(Skate your board to shreds, go to the bargain bin of used beat up used boards cuz you just snapped your’s on the 5 stair gap. Busted up wheel, back to the dollar bin, replace it with a one that doesn’t match the other 4 just to go out skating as fast as possible.)
Or a buddy right there to lend you his deck for you to land a trick during a session when you blow up a set of bearings.
We where the OutKast kids that mom and pops didn’t shell out for replacement parts, so we had to make due with what we had. And man, I had so much fun, definitely one of the best times of my life.
I even missed the bus on purpose to skate to school.
But i digress and ramble....so....
i get that. but i also have instruments that i’ve had for 35 years or more because they were good and would last a long time. sometimes you gotta pay for that. imo, instruments are more like colors or tools than they are skateboards.
Fodera is definitely a better investment than ALOT of stuff I agree 76589765478 percent.
But I was mostly thinking\sharing about where my “mentality” of not needing much might stemmed from.
Not comparing a board to a bass by any means.
A board is made to be used and replaced, not like a bass.
in terms of fodera, really, i just have a problem. 
if you keep them a long time, tweak them so they’re “really you” and love them, they’re worth it. if not, they can be a mistake.

Better problem than getting rims for a 1986 honda accord and bling to matchin terms of fodera, really, i just have a problem.

I've had the same one for about....22 years.
My second one is exactly the same width shape and length made by a pro leather guy.
He even made it slightly curved since the old one had stretched out over the years.
I have to play with a strap at exactly the same height as I play sitting.
EXACTLY.....not close....EXACTLY.
Back on the subject of sound-chasing, it would be fun to see how many of these classics we could replicate using the gear we have (and no computer cheating lol). Some of these sounds are awesome.
Having watched a video on how the music/sound for Forbidden Planet was made, and given how similar some of these sounds are, my guess it they used a lot of reel-to-reel tape tricks to do much of this stuff.

I'm glad I found the corner of TB where I could feel at home talking about weird noises from a 1960s sci fi show. The P-bass-only cover band crowd this is not. I am with my people.
I’m wondering if there are other ambient things. We’ve got music. I can imagine video and photography, or painting. Is there ambient literature or poetry? I’m watching Norm Macdonald and I think he’s telling ambient jokes. There’s a theme and a feel but no traditional set up and punch line; instead the story/joke just keeps going and evolving and being amended.
What other “unexpected” ambient things are there?

I’m glad I bought all my stuff pre kids... just wish I hadn’t sold my fretless cos now I’ll never afford a 5 string fretless *sniff*
