This is why I’ve been quiet lately. Day 4 in the studio is a wrap. After 3 days of cleaning, rearranging, setting up a studio more or less, and getting drum sounds, today we got the basic tracks for 2 of 9 songs done, and part of a 3rd (though may take another shot tomorrow). I don’t think the record itself will be popular on this thread (post metal/space rock/indy), but there will be a lot of bass effects. We spent a lot of time moving mics around and swapping preamps to get sounds. We both learned a lot. We learned we should have rented more short mic stands. Full size stands are a hassle on a kit. Turns out my wife prefers “Neve” flavoured preamps for drums. Like, has strong opinions. It’s fun to be married to a gear head. We learned you can get a relatively massive rock drum sound in a so-so room if you are careful with placement and phase. Though it’s never going to be the same as in a reall great room. And we learned that if you use a Beyer M201 on the snare instead of a SM57, you don’t need to mic under the snare. I think we could get her drum sounds now in about half a day since we know what we like. Also: she did a great job tuning and dampening her drums (the set is a hybrid with my other drummer’s).
Here are some pics. Happy to outline what we rented, but it was nice to break out the collection of mics and pres I’ve been accumulating for 25 years and basically use everything. That said, I don’t think I’d ever try to record more than a 3 piece in our space.
The light isn’t great in there but these will give you an idea.

Definitely down to hear some spacey post metal. Apologies if I missed this if it was earlier in the thread, but are you recording what you just described with your wife on the drums? My wife has expressed interest in playing percussion and I'm trying to find a decent quality/price electronic sample pad for her to play while I play some repetitive, heavily modulated stuff. I showed her some Nadja and she likes it a lot.

Yes, she’s my drummer now, in 2 bands. She started in 2014, but had limb independence and good time from childhood piano instruction.
Can’t recommend a specific sample pad, but avoid the KMI Boppad. Lots of problems with that one.
Ha! I threw out my back in the mid 90s carrying around an old Peavey rig, and that was the option for lightweight cabs at the time. Both speakers have been replaced with newer options and I replaced the grills that would *** cut you with proper speaker grills that don't. I also have an old 2x10 at home that has also had the speakers replaced. These were all before the original owner sold and Flite because a scam. The blue was a custom colour at the time. Sounds surprisingly decent for essentially being made out of paper. It's my "booster" cab. The home rig might get a new Barefaced at some point.

I won’t even say what I’m into these days since the band got back to playing.

Day 5 of recording. It was a magical day. We got drum tracks for three songs done in under 4.5 hours, and decided to call it a day because we were both utterly soaked. We recorded some song parts out of order, which I put in order tonight to make sure it works. Another musician I play with calls it "hobby kitting" when you assemble a song from parts recorded out of order, so that's what we made, a couple hobby kits and a full track.
Also, because we finished early, we came back uptown and stopped by the luthier right before closing. My instrument was ready. The finish is fantastic, and to answer a question that came up earlier on this thread, yes, I think even with thin finish on the neck, it's a little less resonant. With the proper electronics it sounds great--very piano like, but the high strings are very sweet. The setup is very good except the G string sounds a little choked, so I'll drop by on Friday or Saturday, or mess with it myself. It's their first touch guitar, so I can hardly complain.
I made an ambient noodle with it, but all I have is my portable recorder so any little sound in the room (LIKE MY NOISY FLIP FLOPS) gets picked up. Maybe next week.
