Tonight's trivia because why not : the exploding head was director Dave Cronenberg behind and below a dummy head filled with viscera and gelatin, shooting it with a shotgun.
Been so busy, just getting back into playing the synths again after spending a few weeks with the pedalboard. Mixing the latest duo recording, doing some sound design. This n' that.
I think my favorite movie kill ever is Murphy in Robocop getting gunned down by Clarence Boddicker and his thugs.

i saw that when it was first in theaters (and one didn’t expect such things).
really freaked me out.
Exactly why it's so epic.
I saw that when I was a kid and my jaw hit the floor.
Shocking, graphic yet very important to the overall story.
Robocop imo is not only an action flic, it actually has a social msg in it.
It actually predicted the bankruptcy of Detroit city pretty damn accurately.
Anyways in my book it's a classic
I have two favorite scenes from the original Robocop movie, and both made it into the collective vernacular of a couple very different musical projects I've been involved with:
Paul McCrane as Antonowsky (one of Boddicker's henchman) after he test-fires the Cobra Assault Cannon:
There's a pop/rock singer-songwriter-producer who goes by the name EJM and I've done recording session work on a variety of his projects since the 1980s...the sure sign of a keeper take is when EJM stands up and shouts "I LIKE IT!"
Kurtwood Smith as Boddicker busting into Morton's apartment to interrupt his hookers&blow party:
When Debris was writing and recording some of our thornier serial and/or post-tonal works in the mid-1990s we co-opted that phrase into "Pitches, leave!" and shouted it during rehearsals so often that we left it as an Easter Egg on our errata album, written on the inside spine of the CD traycard.
"I'd buy that for a dollar" still comes up in conversation fairly regularly too.

RoboCop was also of its time. When they announced the remake a few years ago I knew it was gonna fall short, just because it's not the 1980s anymore, and because the new one likely would miss the point and lack the cynical humor.
Also, stop-action ED-209 was terrifying in part because of the stop action jerky motion. Modern CGI effects just make all movies look like car commercials.

The ED-209 failed test run is one of the best scenes ever!!!!
Now that I'm an engineer it hits a little different, too lol. I'd have been one of techs in the lab coats pressured into demoing a system that's not ready for prime time.
At least you wouldn’t be the business guy in the suit trying the flee the biggest killer robot ever made.

I agree 100%. Today I had 2 lessons. The second was with a Logic (the software, not the academic field) tutor, who showed me a way to map the grid to the drummer rather than the other way around. It’s not as plug and play as the feature in Ableton alive, but it’s potentially way more precise. Should be interesting to try, as a way of letting the timeline actually breathe. I use beat synced delays on a couple tracks and am interested in applying this method to them. He’s an electronic musician so it was shocking to him that we recorded to a pulse but not on Logic’s grid.
My other lesson was with my touch guitar teacher. The last 2.5 we have been focusing on compositional strategies. In a lot of ways, despite years of writing bass lines, sometimes melodies, and chord changes for rock bands, I’m a beginner on that front, and it’s been mind expanding to think beyond in-key chord progressions, and in terms of common tones. I’m sure it’s basic stuff for a lot of people on this thread. I’m in the midst of finishing one record, mixing another (well, waiting for mix comments) and I can’t wait to try some of this stuff out.
I also started figuring out a Nils Frahm tune. Good music day, crap day for work, but some of my colleagues are losing their **** at the moment so it’s for the better. I never want summer to end.
Oh, and a gear question:
is there a looper with control over start and stop, and that can be used tabletop with a foot switch to trigger (mIdI ok, sync not needed though) and has a straightforward interface?
my H9 can do this, but has a 12 second limit as full audio quality.
I can do this on my Octatrack but am seeking more WYSIWYG.

was just complaining about CGI to a friend. Most of it is so boring to watch. And I say this as someone who loves special effects.
....now get off my lawn!
