Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

This might qualifie as "Postrock", or might not ? That term was finally new to me / idk
Tell me what you think........

its my Bass thru my modular. 4 Loops recordet in live11. Each 4 bars long.

The sound is basically: my Bass (with the Big blades btw. ) thru LP Filter and also thru BP Filter, then mixed on a crossfader.
Plus the "Nutone" (plankton electronics) as the Overdrive unit. (a mikro tube thingy).
( that "breathing noise" is btw. the pickup and modular noise i told you)

its in fact my nearly first attempts to work with live, and to record audio, other than some 4-5 tests over the last 4-5 years.

Disclaimer: Its not the music direction i´m usually heading towards.
it was a spontaneous patch i made one week ago or so, tryed to recreate it, since the outcome is very musical to me.
i.e. its simple to create a music without playing much, so its simple for me to stack up more tracks......thats where i ususally would fail *completly* with my production attempts, since i would not remember what *exactly* i played.
So, following this route, seems the perfect attempt for me, to learn to work with ableton live.

That video could’ve easily been 90 seconds long instead of over 12 minutes! The main point was all those midi controllers working in conjunction with the computer weren’t getting him better results than simply working in the computer. I get that, but it’s a lot different than using hardware, THEN recording that into a DAW for final editing and whatnot. I don’t think that’s the same thing as what most of us here seem to do.
I’ve certainly had those thoughts with modular in that the time and money invested churns out very little of the music I put on a record. Heck, I’ve gotten way more music I like out of my $300 Elektron Model:Cycles than my $10k+ eurorack rig, which is why I took a break from eurorack

I agree that this could have been done in 90 seconds but he is monetizing his channel, so whatever. I do appreciate people being honest and introspective.

I am also looking side-eyed at my Eurorack these days. It's wonderful sonically and as a toy for grown ups, but I'm not getting much music made on it. I will say I have learned a lot about signal processing from Euro. I am also a little blown away that less than a year after my epic reverb search for my pedalboard, I just wound up with a 2nd H9 which I already knew how to program and which always sounds good. Lesson learned, I think. I may in fact be happier with synths as complete instruments. I might sell off a bunch of Euro and invest in one this year, we'll see. I do like some ITB composition as well, especially with the modulators in Bitwig and Numerology software, and the Linnstrument, which is infinitely faster to set up with software.

I keep messing around with my home setup though. That's a Bad Thing for making music. But I am going to clean out my music closet and sell off some more stuff. And I am going to try and "freeze" my home setup before the school year starts.

BTW, I've been enjoying this guy's work: .

He does some great subtle modulation with Pianoteq. He's got a brand new one out with some answering machine samples that's funny but I feel like could be weirder.

I will say I have learned a lot about signal processing from Euro.

i´d say, thats a major point !
not only signal processing, but also thinking in completly new shemes, hopefully.
at least for me , it was.

What i do with VST FX, would be not same, if i never delved deeper into modularsynth-soundsynthesis. The thinking has changed. The approach has changed.

i was too much in german forums.......they tick there differently, lol.

For my personal music live was it allways:
assoon i HAVE to play to a steady metronom, and assoon i hit record,
is my outcome nolonger exactly "my music".
while as a bassist in Bandcontext, was i a listener to the band, myself.
I knew what i play, after i had played it.
.........but thats the difference of "real music making", ...playing with people.
Each ones playing, will inspire you ***out of the moment***.
( i felt out of that context 18 years ago. Had to quit bass playing due to an accident )


But, having a "CV" sequenter going, brings some inspiration back.
just discovered this the last 2 week ! yehaa.
i´m back to Bass since just this year, btw.
( and still should NOT play......but do now / shortscales are a help luckily)

Well. He is a content creator and this is his revenue stream, and he had taken a year off. It certainly could’ve been shorter, but I didn’t mind listening over breakfast.

Definitely focused on controllers more than hardware sounds, but I think his point was made. Focus on the things that work for you. Don’t become trapped by your collection, or get into an arms race. Sometimes a fresh start is refreshing.

I’ve had a few moments where I’ve thought my 1 bedroom in Hollywood with a living room that’s also my office, studio, gym, and guest bedroom might be due for an overhaul. I’ve thought about a change of scenery too. He hit on a few points close to home for me, so I was happy to hear him out.

The change of scenery part was the most valuable part of the video for sure. Whether that’s physically moving somewhere, or just rethinking your space.
I live with the cutest, sweetest pack rat in Nashville, so few things bring me more joy than getting rid of unneeded stuff

Working with the looper today. Man, that's a mind game for me. My timing needs some help. Running the Miezo into the Hilbish Sol Invictus is quite nice, particularly with the Compressimiser after it, I'm sending that signal into my 10" Mesa Subway tube combo and it sounds fantastic. That preamp is good on bass, but it is really nice on the Miezo. I might start building a mini board and dust off some other effects.

I'm thinking of breaking up my big three-row euro rack into a smaller single and a double. After all my energy to make one unified rack, I'm finding myself less motivated to use it as such. I'm considering a few effects for the smaller skiff. The FX AID is still on my radar. That 4MS DLD has me thinking. The Erica Black Hole 2 module or the smaller DSP units could be interesting. Add in one of my inst/euro interfaces and it would be a fun ambient tool.

If I haven't asked, is there a good CV foot controller? I'm thinking of ways to manipulate the sounds while playing. A tap tempo and/or expression pedal would be handy. I could probably rig something via ZOIA. If they ever drop the euro Zoia, then I'd be in business.

Rainy Sunday courtesy of Hurricane Henri, so I whipped out the mini pedalboard and started dabbling. Unaccompanied solo bass -- a Precision with flatwounds, of all things! -- through Chase Bliss Blooper, Iron Ether FMeron, and Montreal Assembly Count To 5. It took me less than two minutes of playing and knob twiddling before this piece arrived at this state:

I prefer the sound quality of the video recordings on my iPhone than voice memo.

But the iPhone gives a nice sheen to the burbles!

I use this one and it’s good: A-177-2

seems like there was a “break up your big system into smaller bits” movement on ModWiggler awhile back. I do like having smaller task-specific instruments. Too big and it’s like a computer or one of the old “workstation” keyboards—trying to be a universal machine.

Get a Portable 2 or 4 track. I record 99.99% of my stuff with mine.
Always ready to go, small, portable and simple.

Did I mention I reallyyyyyyyyyy like simple!!!!!

Me too. When I was living in Berlin I found the local musicians and artists more welcoming than some of the academics (my ostensible reason for being there), but I’m betting that’s not reflected on the boards.

Edit: my hosts were quite welcoming, though.

audioshare is a good app for recording stuff. also has the ability to trim and normalize.

Speaking of audioshare, I had issues importing samples into my DM1 drum machine app.
Every step went fine, then back to the app and sample never loads.
Wall punching-ta-cu-lar.

I went skateboarding to solve to issue.
