The Octatrack ain’t going anywhere. It’s the last piece of hardware I’d sell. I did several jams using the Norand as the only sound source. But all those individual Norand sequences were sampled and further sequenced via the Octatrack. The missing link is live looping. Octatrack is amazing at live sampling, but I don’t enjoy live looping on it. I’m thinking my Octatrack, EssenceFM, Norand, BlackBox and a bass guitar could be pretty formidable in a live context…still spit balling, but it seems reasonable to me at the moment :)

I can usually -- eventually -- find the fun in the cerebral DAW work, but man is hardware more immediate. The time lag between the initial "Whoa this sounds cool I'd better record it!" and actually being able to push the red button is often an order of magnitude worse on the DAW...and as soon as you start counting that lag in minutes rather than seconds, your idea had better be something substantive and codified or else yeah, the fun and the creativity can evaporate. DAWs seem rather incompatible with ephemeral ideas, unless you leave your rig powered on and ready to go 24/7.

I made another little sketch, this time with my Boss RE-20.



I bought the RE-20 around 10 years ago to be a portable, potentially more controllable version of my real vintage RE-201, but it ended up sitting on a shelf. I recently found the box and have been planning to sell it (still looking for the original manual), but yesterday thought I would pull it out of the box and test it. I also need to keep working with the MAQ16/3 - at first I was like "how the heck do I get this to work again?!" only one day after my previous experiment. Wasn't getting sound - finally figured out I had the audio out from the RE-20 plugged into the expression pedal in!

I like the RE-20 more than I expected - it sounds alright with the infinite feedback, though a bit harsh, certainly harsher than the original unit. But it can also have a much longer delay time. And I think it doesn't sound bad for the "normal" echoes. Plus the feedback trails are much more manageable volume-wise than the MF-104 Moogerfooger delay.

I didn't check out the new graphics but I gotta say, my one complaint about the FMeron I own is that it's so hard to read the graphics under typical stage lighting. Which, on the typical stages I play most often, means a single 40-watt incandescent bulb.

Forgot to comment on recording - I love my Zoom H6 - can record in stereo with multiple inputs if mp3, records separate tracks if WAV. So depending on what I want to do, I can either try and make sure the mix is good as I'm recording, or take my WAV files and put them into ProTools to manipulate later. It also works as an audio interface, so can record directly into my iPhone for videos, though it stopped working - I think I need to get a new iPhone, mine is getting pretty old. Fortunately, I think I can get work to pay for that!

Many pedals are hard to read under stage lighting, especially the little mini-pedals like the Bananana Matryoshka, which is hard enough to read in bright sunlight.

I rarely mess with the knobs on the pedalboard once I'm set up though. I use a bright LED flashlight on the edge of my pedalboard if I need to, and the pedals that sit on my synth deck are all under bright LEDs.

Apologies posting again so soon - fired up the MAQ/Sirin combo, decided to also try the RE-201 - it worked! Messed around with a weird spacious sequence that I guess I made around when I first got it. Moved on to the next preset, and I totally do not remember making this:



The real Space Echo sounds so good! Every now and again I'm like, hey, my synth is drifting out of tune! But it's the Space Echo! Forgot how much I love this thing.

For all the secret hair metal fans, I just watched Mean Man, the Chris Holmes doc, and I’d suggest giving it some time. It’s exactly what it should be. Lots of gripes about theatrics and Blackie. Johnny Rod’s appearance was fantastic, despite being one of the least ambient and most pre post-rock bassists you’d ever find.

Woke up this morning to a nice surprise - I had posted the RE-201 clip to my stories on Instagram and tagged Moog - they reposted it this morning!

(This is just a screenshot, they reposted the excerpt of my video so it had sound) I know it's not that big a deal, but still, it felt good! I can hardly wait to build something with more layers - especially bass guitar!

That works! I'm really enjoying this journey - I've had this gear sitting in boxes for years, glad it's getting some use again! Also, that feeling at the beginning of "oh no, this sounds lame, I'm never going to come up with anything" - hearing that voice, but setting it aside and continuing. Discovering something I came up with a long time ago (and having no memory of it) was fun too.
