Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

semi random question for those of you who are using semi/modular stuff:

if you’re inputting stuff via a microphone at line level, what are you using? and is it 3.5mm plugs or not?

tia

I'm using this to get instrument/line up to Euro levels, but that's not quite what you asked.

3.5 should be it (or 1/8").

Thanks for tuning in! The YouTube link still has the video up, but you have to fast forward about an hour to get to the start. I certainly don’t expect anyone to try to absorb the whole thing. As I said to duke, the thing I kinda like about this event is that it can almost be ignored. Tune in, let it run in the background for a bit while you do something else, and then go on with your day.

The monitor behind me was running Children of the Corn. I didn’t have any sound on in the room (other than my humming AC unit). Around the crucifixion scene I felt like the music started to sync up with the video so I focused on trying to keep that going. After Children ended, it rolled into Hellraiser.

I swear the “dollar to note ratio” for the gear used last night was ludicrous. Using and F Bass for that was beyond unnecessary.

The monitor is definitely a cool idea. I like the idea of the environment impacting the music.

I had no idea Strymon did eurorack stuff.

Might want to try this.

  • Eurorack instrument interface
  • Neutrik combo connector with phantom power and gain
  • Envelope follower with positive and inverted outputs
  • Trigger and gate extractor with threshold level
  • Attack and decay response control

That looks awesome. Great price if it sounds good, which I bet it does. I know the Joranalogue stuff sounds great. The Cwejman euro pre is amazing, but the prices are crazy, if you can even find one

Photography of music notes in a bowl of water. Friend on FB reposted this, so I'm not sure how the original was done.

I was out the other day hiking in woods near railroad tracks and a gi-huge-ic freight train rolled by going pretty fast. I mean huge, took it a good five minutes to pass and it was moving maybe 40 mph or more. There's something thrilling and also terrifying about being so close to something that big and heavy going so fast, and it just doesn't stop going for minutes on end, couldn't even stop if the engineer wanted to. All that mass and energy. I could feel the ground shaking under my feet and see the ballast rocks shaking near the rails.

And of course, all that sound. The horns, the engines, and thumping and clunking of steel.

But the coolest sound, which often you don't notice, was the wheels making that humming sound as they roll by. I'm not sure if that's the steel-on-steel contact of the wheels against the rails, or the wheel bearings, but I think it's the bearings. A kind of buzzing, humming sound. To hear it you have to be near a fairly smooth piece of straight track. If it's curved, the wheels make that horrible squealing noise as the flanges guide on the rails, and if it's rough track you just get lots of bumping and thumping. But a straight smooth piece of track, with a long train of freight cars, you can clearly hear that humming sound. I wish I could isolate it, it's very cool. Makes me wonder if it can be emulated with the right synth patch or something.

Just thought I'd write this here since I don't know who else might care to hear me blab about weird found sounds. Or trains. I get why people love to watch trains now.

Dang, this is what I was looking for when I first got into modular

this couldn´t convince me so far.
I´m ALL in for that stuff......well, at least i was.

But the thread at modwiggler is full of complaints, problems, shortcomings, and wishes.
Seems to be a module for folks who clearly *want to focus* on that module, and just that. If you don´t, it seems hard to operate.
just my impression so far

+ , looks for me, like its not finished/fully developed yet.

= for now, not worth that amount of money in my book. YMMV

i´m just demoing right now the VST Crusher-X. A Granular VST.
the price is steep, though. 242€ for EU exteriours. Edit: yet way better than that super expensive module.
The demo works quite good *, so one can deal with the demo in a good way to get a hang for it. No need to just buy it immediately. ( * the restrictions are cleverly set )

Granular Synthesis with crusher-X

I’m gonna keep track of how this module is coming along still. Looks promising to me :)
