Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

i did the preorder on the loupe, but my bank account is a little lower than when i did that and i’m not sure i *need* it.

a friend has it and says it’s got a decent learning curve and i’m already in rtfm mode (big time) for all that modular stuff that’s sucked up my money. so i’m looking for more data points from owners/users to help me make a decision.

I was pretty psyched when Loupé first came out since it had that whole Oberheim EDP emulation thing going on, but since then three things caused me to put the brakes on that idea:
- I too heard about the steep learning curve
- I heard about the SOMA Cosmos, which seems to have zero learning curve ...or quite possibly a negative learning curve, and I'm way more into instant gratification than RTFM these days
- In the interim I got a Chase Bliss Audio Blooper

So yeah, I'm still curious to hear from Loupé users, and it's still on my Some Day GAS list, but no longer on my Must Have GAS list.

What do you use to get those sorts of textures/sounds? I'm very much interested in that sort of thing but I'm so ignorant that I don't even know if it's possible without delving into synths.
I have a lot of luck using this particular chain-C4 or Enzo, into an MD500 for some thickening, then into one or more delays (El Cap, Nemesis, Polymoon, Particle), then into a Blackhole or H9, then into a Meris Mercury 7. I wish I could provide more detail than that, as it's often a lot of throwing things at the wall and seeing what sticks. It's only recently that I've been able to get some major complex/dense sounds out of the board that sound like complicated polysynths, which is what I've been shooting for since day 1.

I posted this a few months back, but I thought you might like to hear this one. I don't think this is the *final* version of this composition, as I have some more concise thematic ways I'd like to use this sound but I've been fine-tuning this sound for a while. I was actually thinking of making a step-by-step video of how I did this. This is the sound I hear often in my head when I'm out on an all-day cross-country ski and it's really gray and snow is hitting some of the mountains in the distance(but not all of them) and it's creating a white smear that moves in front of the gray and ominous sky. I spent about two years and about 200 miles of skiing this while hearing this (or something close) and this is the closest I've come, so far to getting it. It will probably even sound better in the future.

That was awesome. Count me as a vote in favor of the video!

Not sure anyone else does this…?
Didn’t really feel like working on a new piece of music yesterday after mixing the last one, so I decided to make loops for the M8/Octatrack. Ran my Norand Mono through a Count to Five, went through every pattern I’d made and just tweaked the Ct5 as I went, recording everything. Wound up being around 2,800 bars. The one possible downside is everything I did was at the same bpm, but the Octatrack time stretches pretty well within reason. Went through it late last night and chopped out anything I hated and got it down to about a thousand bars of loops/sounds.
I may be the only one here dumb enough to burn that much time making sampler food, but if you feel like doing something ‘musical’ but don’t feel inspired to write, that’s certainly one way of getting a bunch of stuff prepped for when you do feel like writing. Just a thought

Me raises hand: HERE!!! I'm freakin king stupid.

Okay, so I've spent a good chunk of the day filming a tutorial for that texture I posted yesterday. Of course, I've never done this kind of thing before, and after many takes, glitches, figuring out the editing software and a hundred other conundrums, I came up with a somewhat comprehensive 12 minute video...

...which, after editing it and watching it, I absolutely hated it, so I'm doing it all again tomorrow. I need more notes - I'm improvising too much and always keep leaving out key details, or I ramble and say "um" too much. I'm pretty good with public speaking, but I suck at recorded speaking.

I actually had fun doing it, though. Hopefully, I'll have it up soon.

Ooh. Stands for the BIM/BAM/BOUM

I'm still looking forward to it!

In semi-related news, my reverb search took a turn for the weird and I ordered the Gamechanger Light Pedal.
