Those of you that record your own bass, do you use cab sims? Mic your cabs? Just go direct?

I'm messing with tones and I wonder if I'd benefit from a cab sim, even on parts where there's a ton of effects in play.

I'm messing with tones and I wonder if I'd benefit from a cab sim, even on parts where there's a ton of effects in play.

I generally do bass - distortion - comp - cab sim. Then effects after. I use a DSM OCSD, but have been looking at other IR based options.

For me, I want the delay or reverb to be after the fundamental bass tone, so it sounds like the bass is in a space. I feel like running effects before a strong cab voice will limit the frequency response of the effect to the range of the cab sim.

Plenty of ways to skin this proverbial cat. I'm sure everyone has different ideas and techniques.

depends. sometimes i mic one cab; sometimes i mic two if i’m going for stereo; sometimes i use my ebs microbass 2 as a di and futz with it to get sound.

sometimes i think i’ve done cab sims after those as well.

I always use an amp and cab sim on bass (if not micing the real cabinet).

I almost always do even on synths just because, synth through a bass amp or similar is the way I am used to hearing them. Ive mostly long used them in the context of working with a live drummer versus more in the box stuff.
