Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

Now that my eurorack hiatus seems to have ended, it’s all coming back to me. Way too many hours on Modular Grid trying to make everything you want fit in the rack, hand wring over what you ‘need’ then realizing how much money you spent. My rack has already changed to this (as soon as everything gets shipped in)

Funny, I think of all the synths I’d like, but can’t afford like an Iridium, M or UDO Super Six. I could buy all 3 for what I have wrapped up in eurorack :)

I definitely prefer my modular filters to have lots of utility and to be something more than a filter. I had a Filter 8 for a while, but traded for a Schlappi Engineering Angle Grinder. Very similar in overall features (except 4 outputs rather than 8), but a bit more character IMHO. There's something about the way its highpass sounds that I really like.

It also has some comparator-based waveshaping in the feedback path. That makes it much more interesting when it's oscillating, and can add some bite as a filter. In halfway-between places can make it pretty chaotic, and it'll sit there chirping and growling to itself with some settings.

My other main filter is a Mutable Instruments Blades. Lots of versatility in that one, and when it's oscillating it'll do phase modulation thanks to the Mode CV input.

I haven't played too much yet with running my U-bass through modular. Mostly I was trying to get some semi-reliable pitch tracking going on and failed miserably. I was hoping to play the bass through Rings. As an alternative I might just sequence the pitch and play the same sequence on the bass...

@Starthief! Welcome to our little weirdo corner of Talkbass. It's wonderful to see some people from the synth world showing up here.

This is when I decided to just swallow it and invest in a poly synth. I've got too much money tied up in Euro and while it's great, a lot of what I want to do actually works well with fixed-architecture synths.

Went the opposite way. Sold stuff that wasn't being used.
Caveman we go.

One day I’ll grab one of those to satisfy my curiosity! Seems really cool. I really like my Cwejman MMF-1S filter a lot, though it’s large and too expensive. The Verbos Amp and Tone does a great job too. The two I’m on the fence about keeping are the Filter 8 and L-1 DDVCF. Both awesome, but I’m only allowing myself the Intellijel 7U case for now, so room is at a premium

Ironically, same here! We’ll see how it all shakes out :)

I've still been listening to a lot of Manuel Göttsching - I ordered the CD/DVD version of "Gin Rosé" (MG & Klaus Schulze's Ash Ra reunion in 2000) - the DVD is kind of low quality, just someone with a camcorder, but gives a lot of insight into how the music was created. I also picked up "Starring Rosi" - some of the earlier more psychedelic stuff from 1973. Then I found this:

The Story of E2-E4 - Manuel Göttsching's Accidental Masterpiece

I had E2-E4 on CD and did not get it. Boring beat-driven dance music is what I thought, but reading this made me want to listen again and I like it a lot more now, especially better understanding what was going on. Someone here mentioned the "Private Tapes" that get mentioned here too - I feel like I saw those available once - should have grabbed them!

(There's an interesting article at the bottom of the page about Beverly Glenn-Copeland who I had never heard about too)

Trying to amass a library of music to pitch for tv/film. I’ve had a fair amount of luck with that over the years, so what the heck.
Just finished a eurorack jam and recorded it. Still needed a bass, so I added a Waldorf Largo soft synth bass. Modules are;

Verbos Complex Oscillator
Cwejman MMF-1S filter
Just Friends, Noise Tools, Mimeophon
Dinky’s Taiko for low perc
2HP Hats
2HP Play using an Elektron Analog Four snare sample

Just skimmed through that E2-E4 record as I’d never heard it before. I bet I woulda liked it more when it came out. I struggle with that ‘smooth jazz’ guitar type stuff though :/

Right, I think I'd want this guy to only hear my best stuff, so I haven't done that.

There are a few options - you can have multiple accounts on Soundcloud, YouTube, etc. (I have 4 SC, 3 YT, and 2 Bandcamp, for different bands, work, etc.) - you just need different email accounts (I have at least 5 gmail accounts!). And within Soundcloud, if you have a paid account, you can "spotlight" up to 5 tracks - they show up at the top so that's the first thing people see. Or you can link to specific tracks. Part of me wants to set up a new YouTube account for the stuff where I'm experimenting with new gear or whatever as opposed to more "complete" tracks, but I just decided to make them unlisted so that I can post the links to places like this, but the average person that comes across my YouTube page won't see them.

hey,

so i was under the impression that you have to supply different paypal accounts for different bandccamp accounts/pages (admittedly, i looked into this a long time ago). is that not the case?

Good catch - I believe you are right. I did set up a separate PayPal for one of my bands a few years ago. Since then I’ve given up on making any money! I think I’ve made $20 in 3-4 years from that band, and less than $10 for my main hieronymous account…

huh, i’ve made dozens of dollars from bandcamp.

too bad, i was hoping to have an easy way to have two bandcamp pages.
Looks like I gotta step up my game! :D

Actually, I find Bandcamp to be the most anxiety-inducing - maybe because, even though I make almost no money, I still feel like I have to produce something that much better because someone might buy it. I've got some ideas in the works to re-release some older stuff, but going through old hard-drives, figuring out which was the "final" version, deciding if it's ok as-is or needs work, then do I go back to the original multitrack files or just work with this mix - that's why I haven't put anything out on BC since last May. It was the my most listened-to track on Soundcloud, I figured maybe I could capitalize on that with BC, but only got 6 purchases, so that didn't exactly motivate me either... (Though of course, 6 purchases is kind of mind-blowing in its own way)
