There was a mention of a bass specific design. I haven't looked for that yet.
According to wikipedia the original Gizmotron maker sold out and disappeared in the 80s; the new ones are made by a new company and are of an updated, more modern design. Says if you find an original one the plastic parts are likely deteriorated beyond use even if it's new in the box.

So you modulars guys…have you checked out the TipTop Buchla modules? They sound pretty darn good to me and are relatively affordable. Just saying

How do you single coil guys manage the hum in your rig? Noise gates? Stacked pickups? Just let it ride? Roll back the tone knob? Fix it in post?
I love the single coil sound sound on my BNF5 and 4003, but I can't deal with the hum buildup in the reverb. I've got some hum buckers that sound good, but I do like playing the singles. I've been looking at adding a J style bass to my collection and I'm still eying a fretted BN5, so I've got my eyes out for stacked J pickups, and I'm considering popping for a BN5 Deluxe (which has hum buckers) though that's a huge pill to swallow.

I've got a full case and don't want to make any major changes this year, after being a little too intensely into trading stuff around. The modules they're offering also don't really give me anything I don't have, they just do it in stylish Buchla fashion
I'd be more tempted by something like the 259 or 261, though to be honest, that's pretty well covered by the Intellijel Shapeshifter. I'd be most tempted by an affordable, Euro-compatible 208 (the top half of a Music Easel). It also seems like the least likely collaboration though, and I'm not sure where in my little studio corner I'd put it.

Talkbass gear snobs ruin everything.
It works, the VT is the Swiss Army knife pedal. I’ve done every gig and style from bebop to black metal with one.

Hey the set up works, can’t argue with that. Heavy rock with 2 loud guitars; no one cares/hears the bass anyways

Replying because I'm interested in solutions as well.
I know we’ve got a few Ric players here regularly. I’m assuming they’ll chime in at some point. I actually got my Ric out last night and started playing around. I was able to find a few setting that were relatively silent. I’ve got a Nordy neck pickup which is wired so that when both pickups are on you get hum free operation. Of course if you move one pickup’s volume knob then the hum creeps back in.
I often use my Westone Spectrum for the ambient stuff, and it has humbuckers.
I guess I haven't run into major hum problems with my 4003 unless I'm using a dirt pedal. My dirt of choice is a Darkglass b3k, and that sucker will absolutely amplify hum, which doesn't matter when I'm playing rock live. When I have used it for ambient stuff at home, I usually don't use dirt, I guess. At least I don't remember it being much of a problem. I do know that the type of lights you have in the room, as well as the house wiring, can be a factor, and when I run into nasty hum on stage, I rotate my body to look for an angle where the hum is at a minimum.
dimmers play havoc with noise, from what i understand.

Wanting single coils and no hum is like wanting your cake and eat it to.
Jazz bass with both pickups on full is dead quiet with singles.
Go for splits\humbuckers etc… if you want quiet pickups.
(I prefer single coils BTW but played Fralin splits in my jazz for a long time so I know both sides of the coin.)
