Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

I wrote to MihaDo this morning and they answered within a couple of hours, and on Easter Sunday too, which surprised me.

Their own custom pickups are double coil. They can do the B-style body in 18", which I think would look pretty sharp. They quoted me 820 Euro for an 18" B-style 5-string with no headphone preamp, monorail style bridges and their tuning system. It'd be 325 more for ABM monorail with integrated tuners, which I guess is not a surprise.

So I'm feeling a bit more favorable toward them, and yet it also makes me think MüB is offering a really good deal even after their price increase... so I will talk to Maurizio next

I couldn't quite get the DI recording of this to do what it sounded like in my room, but this is a redux of the last track I posted with the BSRI Ash Maker, now using their FZZ fuzz, and the same basic run as before. This was the Nordy Acinonyx bass into the FZZ, then into a Hilbish Sol Invictus and a DSM OCSD. That signal went to the OTO BIM & BAM for delay and reverb. I took a copy of the wet/blended signal from the mixer along with a "dry" dirty signal from the OCSD. I did a little mixing in post to get the spread sounding a bit better and then glue it all together. Good enough for the short list of non-bot listeners to get the idea. This was really about the FZZ doing what it does.

I was summoned by the Mom Signal to Easter dinner this weekend so I brought my little Volca Bass synth and a delay pedal with me to record something while hiding from the rest of my family for a couple of hours. Once I get it ready for upload I'll share it later.

It's weird how I have ample gear and time at home and accomplish little, but spend a few hours with some simple gear away from my house and suddenly I cough up a track out of nothing.

Also, on the electronic and drone front I picked up a copy of Eliane Radigue's Isla Resonantes album, been looking for it for a while.

I have been feeling this a lot. It’s also an issue of relative complexity. That’s why I put away the Eurorack. It’s interesting to see what I do and don’t miss.

She’s been on my Covid listening list as I pass in and out of consciousness. But after my first encounter with Serge a couple weeks back, I’ve been getting to know this record:

Just a little something I whipped up along with this morning's coffee: Steinberger L-2 bass into a VFE Klein Bottle, split out to a Chase Bliss Blooper, Montreal Assembly Count To 5, and Soma COSMOS. I did one pass with the bass prior to hitting record just to load up the Blooper with some fodder, then hit record while I bounced stuff back & forth between the Ct5 and the COSMOS. I kinda like the turn it takes shortly after the 4:00 mark. I kinda hate that glitch where it sounds like all the ambience disappears for a second just prior. meh...

I've been making lots of ambient soundscape stuff like this of late. Not sure what I'm going to do with them (probably nothing), but good fun to make all the same. And I love sitting back and zoning out while the pedals take over and the soundscape evolves over the course of 30 minutes...

this kind of elides with a conversation about orchestration i had with someone yesterday as well as a bit of my own eurorack process recently.

i think that the temptation with a lot of things is to *use it all*—whether it's one's full eurorack or pedal setup or an orchestra. imo, after a while the impulse to "use all the colors" tends to yield *brown* . . .

so for me is the challenge is to hone down and use juxtapositions of different densities, timbres dynamics. some of this (for me at least) gets into intent/concept before doing stuff (not that i always do that )

This would be my first foray into keyboards/synth and I have more interest in making some interesting sounds out of the box than sitting down and learning how to "play piano." The Microfreak seems well suited to this but I know basically nothing about this stuff. (And I don't care to dive into the money pit of Eurorack.)

from what i can tell it's very cool. i'm sorta maxed out in the synth thing, so not something i need. (that being said, have you considered the hydrasynth explorer? i don't know the price differences, but its bigger brothers are amazing.)

@ugly_bassplayer has one. not sure it's his thing.

That's a bit more than I feel like spending. I don't have a budget carved in stone for this, but I kinda' arbitrarily decided it should be under $500.

I'm seeing $599 for the Hydrasynth Explorer and $349 for the Microfreak. The budget I set is completely arbitrary though.

Watching a Hydrasynth Explorer demo now and it definitely seems awesome. Is it sort of a different animal than the Microfreak to some extent? Maybe it's just the guy doing the demo.
